If you’ve been using Google Files’ Important tab to store your documents, then you will have to relocate them soon. Google is planning to remove the Important tab from Google Files in February 2024.

The Important tab was introduced by Google back in December 2022 during the Google for India event. And the feature was rolled out exclusively for users in India in May this year. This tab is specifically designed to securely store vital documents like passports, Aadhaar cards, or PAN cards.

It allows users to copy details directly from the app, simplifying the process of entering information like passport or PAN numbers into online forms. Additionally, users can easily search the Important tab for specific documents or filter them by category. The key advantage is its biometric or device lock protection which ensure the utmost security for these sensitive files.

Google Files users getting in-app message about removal

However, Google is now warning users via the app about the removal of the Important tab. The notification warns that this tab will not be available after February 15, and all documents stored in it will be deleted.

To prevent any data loss, users are strongly advised to relocate their documents elsewhere before the cutoff date. There’s also a Safe Folder within the Files app. While the ‘Important’ tab exclusively accommodates documents, the Safe Folder stores all types of files. Hence, users can now use Safe Folder to store all their important documents.
