The Google Pixel 8 series arrived a couple of months ago, with the Pixel 8 Pro having some exclusive features like a thermometer, although it only works correctly with objects. However, this could change soon as the ‘Pro’ model’s integrated thermometer could gain the ability to read your body temperature too.

Pixel 8 Pro thermometer could soon read your body temperature with Fitbit

After decompiling the code of the Fitbit app v4.06.7, the 9to5Google team found direct references to integration with the Pixel 8 Pro thermometer to obtain body temperature data that complements the user’s general health and physical condition profile.

According to the source, the readings obtained by the thermometer could appear as a new item in the ‘Today’ tab. More specifically, the code of the decompiled Fibit app includes the following description:

Choose if you want to let Fitbit save and store body temperature data to your Fitbit profile. Once you tap save, your phone’s thermometer will start sharing data with Fitbit, including this and all future results unless you stop sharing.

The Fitbit app will keep your body temperature readings synchronized along with the tracking of your physical activity and health, in addition to offering you graphs of your daily body temperature levels. You will also have the option to manually enter data on your body temperature obtained by other means.

It’s worth noting that ‘body temperature’ and ‘skin temperature variation’ measurements (already offered on some wearables) are different things, and the Fitbit app will have a section dedicated to clarifying this through the following description:

Body temperature is taken by a thermometer and reflects the temperature inside your body. Skin temperature variation is the fluctuation in temperature taken from your wrist while you sleep

Google had already announced in October that it was working on this feature, although the mention was so short that perhaps many would overlook it:

Will Google offer the possibility of using the body temperature readings in other apps and services as well? We will have to wait to find out.
