Google recently released a new system app for Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro users that it calls AICore. While the exact purpose of the app is still unknown, word on the street is it will power Android’s latest AI features and models, although at this time it’s still limited to Google’s latest flagship phones. And perhaps in preparation for its official launch, Google is now rolling out a new update to the AICore app, although it’s only available for the Pixel 8 Pro.
There are signs that Google will bring the AICore app to other Android devices. While it’s still limited to the Pixel 8 duo, evidence of its existence surfaced when Mishaal Rahman discovered that Android 14 had a stub (placeholder) for the app — a tactic Google uses to prepare a new system app that’s meant to be updated via the Play Store.

The AICore app first appeared in the Google Play Store in June and now there’s a new update to the stub app that brings it to version number 0.release.582652206. Again, there’s still no indication of what the app can do, but there’s definitely some progress in terms of development. The new version now has a settings page with a single switch to “Enable AiCore Persistent” that is accessible via Settings > System > Developer options. As noted, this update (and setting) is only available on Pixel 8 Pro, but it’s likely that the standard Pixel 8 will also get it.
According to the description, the switch will “Allow AiCore to carve out memory and run persistently.” There are also strings inside the app that mention requesting permission to bind to the AiCore service, but there’s no further details than this. But if you’re familiar with Google’s ARCore app, you’ll be quick to note that AICore’s naming convention is an indicator this app will be responsible for bringing AI updates to backend functionality.
