New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….

Original story (published on October 18, 2023) follows:

In the vibrant world of live streaming on Twitch, a growing concern is emerging, one that involves the ‘Cheer screen’ blocking chat on the iOS version of the app.

Twitch Cheer screen blocking chat

At the heart of this issue is an unexpected obstacle that disrupts the typical Twitch experience on iOS. When streamers attempt to send messages or read the chat, a notification appears, stating, ‘You cannot Cheer in your own channel.’ This message is designed to prevent self-cheering, a function allowing users to support their favorite streamers with ‘Bits’. However, this notification is unexpectedly causing distress, as it obstructs the chat window, making it unreadable.

Streamers have reported that the ‘Bits’ overlay appears directly over the chatbox, obscuring messages and preventing them from interacting with their audience. Tapping the ‘Bits’ icon does not remove the overlay, further compounding the issue. In response to this problem, some streamers have resorted to uninstalling and reinstalling the app, but it is important to note that this action does not resolve the issue.

The impact on streamers and viewers

Furthermore, the impact of this issue is significant, as I came across several reports on Twitter along with a few threads on Reddit. Streamers rely on the chat to interact with their audience, respond to comments, and maintain an engaging live stream. The inability to see or respond to messages hinders their ability to create an enjoyable streaming experience.

Viewers, on the other hand, may find it frustrating when they are unable to communicate with their favorite streamers. This could potentially discourage viewers from participating in Twitch streams or seeking out new content creators.

Issue acknowledged

Concerned by the growing number of complaints, Twitch Support acknowledge the issue. In a tweet, they confirmed that it is particularly associated with the latest iOS app update.

One temporary solution is to avoid updating the iOS app. If you haven’t updated, you may be able to continue using the app without experiencing this issue.
