Overwatch 2 has once again ignited controversy with the release of the new competitive Flashpoint mode.
Numerous players have taken to social media platforms to share their opinions, resulting in a mixed flood of positive and negative remarks.
Flashpoint is horrible.. Please don’t add it in competitive, it’s not enjoyable at all. (Source)
I think the mode is alright, I might even like it more than Control since it’s all one map and not 3 different ones. Maybe I just want to hear someone else agree with me. At the end of the day I know Overwatch players are gonna complain about everything. (Source)
Since its release, Overwatch 2 has been a subject of continuous controversy, even earning the unfortunate title of ‘worst-rated game ever’ for PC.
Despite initial fan hype surrounding its announcements, the final product was deemed ‘lackluster’ according to reviews.
In an effort to regain its reputation, Blizzard Entertainment introduced a new competitive mode called the ‘Flashpoint mode’.
In this mode, two teams of five compete to capture three control points. These points, named Flashpoints, are revealed sequentially, with the next objective only spawning after one team secures the previous point.
However, mixed player reports (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) make it evident that this mode might not be the solution to the game’s issues.
Why do Overwatch 2 players think Flashpoint mode is damaging?
The primary concern about the new mode centers on its lack of combat. As an online hero shooter, Overwatch 2 heavily relies on fast-paced PvP team battles.
Due to the mode’s expansive maps and limited enemy encounters, players are labeling it as ‘boring’ and falling short of competitive standards (1, 2, 3, 4, 5).
The game mode is almost all running for minimal fighting and the maps are all swiss-cheese designs. They’re terrible. (Source)
The majority of the match is spent running to the next flashpoint, which is always more than 100 meters away. If half the team dies in a fight, but the other half clinches the win, the team is on two opposite sides of the map. (Source)
However, some players have voiced support for the mode. They claim it introduces a fresh perspective to the game while presenting expansive and intricate maps for exploration.
I guess I’m in the minority here! I LOVE Flashpoint! Suravasa is arguably my favorite Overwatch map now. There’s something I really like about the fast pace of the gamemode, it definitely feels like a breath of fresh air after push, and I like how each game feels different from the last. (Source)
Ultimately, the trajectory of Flashpoint mode remains uncertain. As of now, there have been no official statements addressing this new controversy.
We will closely monitor the situation and provide updates if and when further developments arise.
