Baldur’s Gate 3 players have lately started requesting an option to remove a friend’s custom character from the co-op party after they exit.
Upon starting a co-op party, all players are taken to the character creation screen together and have to build their personalized characters.
Playing together with a diverse combination of characters allows one to create a distinct and unforgettable adventure.

However, by looking at the complaints (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10), it appears that several gamers are dissatisfied with the game’s co-op party feature.
Currently, when players join such a party, they have to create a new character and cannot select an existing one.
This implies that if someone joins a co-op game halfway through a campaign, they end up permanently adding a custom character. And there is no way to delete this character from the host’s party.

As per the reports, the group leaders are also encountering difficulties leaving custom player characters in camp.
Additional players joining the game can only control their existing characters and are unable to create new ones as well.
Notably, gamers could not remove old characters and add new ones in the game’s early access version as well. However, those affected are now speculating whether this limitation is intentional or a design flaw.
This must be a bug, right? There’s no way this would be a design choice. I joined my friend’s game for a moment to see how he was doing. We just found out that my custom character is now permanently in his party forever. There’s no way to remove him.

I might be misremembering but it was possible in EA to join an inprogress multiplayer game and control one of the companions. is that not doable anymore?

Some believe that it makes sense to lock in the players to ensure narrative consistency. They also feel that this helps prevent immersion-breaking situations where characters appear and disappear randomly.
However, others think that a dynamic design choice would be more flexible and convenient. They also argue that it would allow for a variable party composition.

06:28 pm (IST): We have come across a workaround that can help you remove a friend’s custom character from co-op party. It involves the following:
I found a (kind of) workaround for this. If you have a save you can load before your friend joined, revert back to that point and your friend’s character will no longer be in your party.

So far it looks like the only workaround for this bug is to make the character who you want to leave the party aggro so the game no longer thinks theyre friendly. I suspect the masks in the Hag’s basement (when she is still alive) may achieve the same result but I havent tested it yet.
