YoYo Games recently released the version 2023.6.0.137 update for GameMaker that introduces bug fixes to some known issues and several new features and improvements as well.

For instance, the recent patch adds new debug overlays utilizing a new GUI and a ‘game launcher’ system, three new audio effects, and makes changes to Cocoapods for easier setup on Mac and the Xbox GDK for video rendering.

The latest update also adds support for the new NPLN multiplayer system on Switch, Spine collisions, and SDF font controls. However, despite the update, some are experiencing issues.

GameMaker not working or Mac detects ‘YoYo Runner’ as malware when running games

Multiple GameMakers users (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9) are facing an issue where the app is not working properly or keeps closing as soon as it is launched.

There have also been claims that Mac detects ‘YoYo Runner’ as malware when running a game. In addition to this, some PC owners get an ‘Error->403 forbidden’ message when trying to access the app.

Whereas others are getting a ‘Unable to access the Runtime Feed and no local runtime installed. Please check your internet connection and start GameMaker again’ error on the app launch.

And this is, without a doubt, quite disheartening for all those who are unable to test the games that they have created using the app.

An app user claims to be experiencing this problem with the most recent version of GMS on macOS when trying to build using the Virtual Machine. They allege that the build crashes and produces an error.

Hi guys im receiving this error on my mac suddenly, yesterday it worked well, everytime i try to compile my project. It says “yoyo runner” will break your computer. You should move it to the trash. This file was downloaded in a unknown date.

Another says that whenever they try to run a game, Game Maker notifies them that YoYo Runner is harming their device. They are also asked if they want to take it to the trash or undo the action.

Mac users are not able to test their games since yoyo-runner identified as malware. Please fix this issue too 😭

Some have even tried workarounds, like, modifying the security settings to allow the yoyo runner to execute and uninstalling and reinstalling the app, but to no avail.

Potential workaround

Fortunately, you can try installing the beta version of the app from the Steam Store for a potential fix. To do so, you need to right-click in the Steam library, go to properties, and then move towards the ‘betas’ option.

After this, you need to click on the ‘beta participation’ option and choose beta 1.4.9999’.

Update 1 (July 20, 2023)

05:26 pm (IST): One of our readers has suggested a workaround for this issue and you can check it out below.

Solution –
1) Search for the “YoYo Runner.app”-file in Finder on your Mac (you may have many, get the latest one)
2) Right-Click and choose “Get Info”
3) There is an option under General (below the version number) saying “Override Malware Protection” -> Put a check mark there
4) Confirm whatever warning comes

I still have trouble with VM as output, which means that I can’t run the game in Debug mode. It seems like this weirdness is still the cuase.
