Samsung’s flagship smartphones have always been praised for their cutting-edge technology and top-of-the-line features. However, even the most advanced devices can encounter issues from time to time.
The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, known for its exceptional camera capabilities, has recently faced a setback as users have reported problems with its front camera.
Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra ‘front camera distortion’
Following the June update, some Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra owners have taken to social media platforms to express their concerns regarding the front camera distortion issue (1,2,3,4).
For reference, the image attached below shows how the photo looks in the viewfinder (left) and after processing (right).
Having the same issue, after June update installed today(India), I’m not sure if this is a feature or not because it’s only happening with faces, it could be samsung trying to fix the face because camera is held at a certain angle but that’s just a guess.

I don’t have the distortion on wf5 but the quality is trash. Maybe it was always that way. I basically have to always use portrait or I look like an oil painting.

Users have reported that selfies with the front camera exhibit noticeable distortion, making facial features appear warped or stretched. In a video shared by a user, the face appears visibly zoomed-in.
It’s been claimed by a number of users that the issue doesn’t occur in Portrait Mode at all. However, the distortion is ostensibly there when using the regular or normal mode.
In my case the same, portrait mode is ok, but regular mode goes crazy with post processing.

Aaaaah this is the pancake face you mentioned! Ok so when I replied I’d used portrait mode. If I don’t, it does do this but on a much smaller scale.

While the exact cause of the front camera distortion issue is yet to be determined, it’s plausible that the June update inadvertently introduced a software bug that affects the camera’s image processing algorithms.
Another possibility is that the update triggered a hardware malfunction. It would undoubtedly require physical inspection and repair by the team.
No official comment in sight
Unfortunately, Samsung has not acknowledged the reports of front camera distortion on the Galaxy S23 Ultra. However, users are encouraged to reach out to customer support for assistance and to report their experiences.
We hope that the team fixes the issue soon and comes up with a permanent resolution at the earliest.
We will keep tabs on latest developments and update this article to reflect noteworthy information.
