Apple recently released iOS 16.5.1 update for eligible iPhone users. And while the update was aimed to bring some bug fixes, it appears to have done just the opposite as some users report new bugs after installing it.

A section of users are reporting (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7) that Apple CarPlay is randomly disconnecting for them or steering wheel buttons are not responding.

Apple CarPlay ‘disconnecting’ or ‘steering wheel buttons not working’

As per reports, users are experiencing connectivity problems and issues with steering wheel buttons after the iOS 16.5.1 update, with some reports indicating that the issues may have begun with the previous iOS 16.5 update.

I have an android head unit that uses an app called z link to connect to my iPhone. However, it keeps disconnecting randomly from my phone, sand displays a message saying ‘waiting’. Any ideas how I could make to connection more stable so it doesn’t disconnect? (Source)

I have a 2022 RAV4, just recently I am unable to adjust the volume. This isn’t consistent in that every once in awhile I can adjust it. Seems to only have become a problem since the last software update (Source)

In the first issue, users are unable to establish a successful connection between their iPhone and CarPlay which means they are unable to access certain apps and other functionalities.

Furthermore, some users are reporting that the physical buttons on the steering wheel that are designed to control CarPlay functions are not working.

As a result, users can’t control functionalities such as adjusting volume and playing next song, among others, directly from the steering wheel.

The good news is that Apple is reportedly (1, 2) aware of both issues and is actively working on a fix. However, no specific timeline has been provided as to when they will be fixed.

As of now, there aren’t any potential workarounds that can help you temporarily fix these issues. But we’ll keep tabs on the latest developments and update this article accordingly.
