New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….

Original story (published on November 14, 2022) follows:

Pixel phones come with a feature that automatically filters out a caller’s background noise and enhances their voice, so you can hear them when they’re in a crowded or noisy place.

Google Pixel 7 Pro mic filtering out high-pitched voices

However, currently, some Google Pixel 7 Pro users are facing an issue where the device’s mic is filtering out high-pitched voices (1,2,3).

Google Pixel 7 Pro

It appears that the AI or background noise filtering on Google Pixel 7 Pro has issues while picking up high pitch voices during calls.

The affected users say that when their kids talk to anyone on the phone, the receiver is unable to hear them clearly. The kid’s voice is being identified as background noise and gets filtered out.

However, the other person can plainly hear them when they speak in a deeper tone. This happens on multiple apps like WhatsApp and other native Android calling applications.

Since some users were able to duplicate it on a different Pixel 7 Pro, it appears to be a phone-related issue.

I’m using pixel from the version 4 and the 7 pro is an unusable phone for me as my kids voices are not picked up by the microphone. AI is doing some kind of background noise filter to remove my kids voices. You can find more info here. Stay away from this phone if you have kids.

When making calls or Whatsapp video calls. Only my voice is heard that too only if very close to the phone. When my wife or kids are talking, the person on the other end of the phone call is unable to hear their voices.

Potential workaround

Google has not yet publicly acknowledged this problem. In the meantime, a potential workaround involves disabling the Clear Calling feature.

Follow these steps to do so:

1. Go to ‘Settings’ on your Google Pixel 7 Pro

2. Now, select ‘sound and vibration’

3. then find the ‘Clear Calling’ option

4. Toggle the Clear Calling feature ‘off’

If this workaround helped fix the voice issue, do let us know in the comments down below. Also, we will be updating this space once the problem is resolved so stay tuned for more information.

Update 1 (November 24, 2022)

05:26 pm (IST): A product expert has confirmed that they have escalated this issue to the Meet team for further investigation.

Update 2 (January 6, 2023)

05:39 pm (IST): The issue was escalated over a month ago by a Google Product Expert. Unfortunately, there are no new updates in this regard and the reports continue to emerge (1, 2, 3).

Also, according to a user, the issue seems to affect certain musical instruments as well:

I found out over last week that certain musical instruments may also be affected due to this issue. Over a video call the sound of a violin playing was blocked out

Update 3 (June 16, 2023)

05:20 pm (IST): The recent Google Pixel June 2023 update includes a fix for an issue that occasionally causes some voices to be suppressed in VOIP calls made with some apps.

Notably, the patch addresses the bugs on Pixel 7, 7 Pro, and 7A units.
