However, Janitor AI has also come under criticism from a section of users (1,2,3,4,5) because of its paywall. Allegedly, one needs to pay before they can engage in a conversation with bots.

Some are sad as they have wasted a lot of their time creating custom bots. They have even questioned the point of asking for payments just for chatting with a chatbot.

One of those affected says that they get an error stating that they have exceeded their current quota before sending even a single message.

Another claims that they are now going to stick with Character AI only.

04:09 pm (IST): The growing popularity of Janitor AI is attracting many new users, affecting the performance of the service (server bugs and login issues).

However, the dev team confirmed that they are ‘working on fixing and upgrading the servers to handle the new activity‘.

05:18 pm (IST): Janitor AI is reportedly (1, 2) not making any money from the project. The payment that users have to do is to use the OpenAI quota as it uses OpenAI model, not one of its own.

04:53 pm (IST): There are users apologizing on behalf of the community for being somewhat demanding with the Janitor AI dev team, which is still small and does not get economic returns from the project (1, 2, 3).

However, the dev team continues to work on improving the servers, they just weren’t ready for the huge popularity they are getting.

05:11 pm (IST): For those interested, new Open AI users get credit for 500 messages on Janitor AI. After that, there are fees starting at $5 for more messages (1, 2, 3).

10:45 am (IST): It’s noteworthy that Janitor AI does not use its own model, but instead uses Open AI. This causes Open AI from time to time to ban accounts that generated NSFW content for breach of terms of use (1, 2, 3).

The Janitor AI team warns of this through their website and they reveal that they are working on a fix. They also recommend creating a new Open AI account as a temporary workaround.

10:45 am (IST): An official report suggests that Janitor.AI Beta will be rolling out to power users in the next few days.
