New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….

Original story (published on May 31, 2023) follows:

In the world of social media, Instagram has become a popular platform for sharing stories, connecting with friends, and expressing creativity.

To stay on top, developers must constantly experiment with new features or adjustments to current ones. At times, they’re a smash hit, while other times, they fall flat.

The later is the case with a recent update to the iOS app that has left users perplexed and dissatisfied, as they have noticed a sudden change in the appearance of Instagram Story icons (1,2,3,4,5,6,7)

Instagram is widely appreciated for its visually appealing and aesthetically pleasing interface. The sudden enlargement or zooming in of the story icons disrupts the visual harmony and consistency of the platform.

Users have grown accustomed to the previous icon size, and this sudden change is jarring and affects their overall experience on the platform.

Over time, users develop muscle memory and familiarity with the placement and size of various elements within an app.

So, this Story icons new size is causing distraction while scrolling the feed or is just unappealing to Instagram users.

The Android version of the app was last updated on May 22, while the iOS version received an update on May 30, which is coincidentally when users began noticing the enlarged icons.

This indicates that the update likely introduced the change that affected the icon size.

Instagram users are also looking for ways to revert this change as they absolutely despise it.

So today while I was taking a break and going on Instagram, I realized that the story icons on my home page are huge now. I remembered how some of my friends have it that big but I don’t like how it is. Is there a way to change it back?

It is worth considering the possibility that Instagram is conducting routine testing on its platform.

Social media platforms often test new features and designs on a small subset of users before rolling them out globally.

It is plausible that the larger story icons are part of such a testing phase, where select users are being exposed to the change while others are not.

Update 1 (June 1, 2023)

10:28 am (IST): Instagram got a new update on Android as well, and users have started reporting the same change. So, it looks like a change through update and not on server side (1, 2).

In that case, a potential workaround for Android users could be uninstalling the app and installing a previous version. You can find older versions in trusted repositories like APK Mirror.

Update 2 (June 2, 2023)

05:19 pm (IST): It is possible that the change in the size of the Instagram Story icons is taking place at the server level in some accounts, and not through the latest update.

After updating vs Before updating

I did a test taking a screenshot after and before updating the app, but it seems that in both cases the size of the icons is identical.

Update 3 (June 6, 2023)

09:10 am pm (IST): Reports related to the issue have intensified in recent hours, suggesting that the change in the Instagram Story icons size is being implemented on a larger scale (1, 2, 3).

Update 4 (June 7, 2023)

12:52 pm (IST): Instagram has released a new update on iOS and Android. That means more users are now getting new large sized story icon.

Update 5 (June 8, 2023)

05:27 pm (IST): Some users feel that the new size of the Story icons makes the UI look like intended for older adults (1, 2).

Update 6 (August 9, 2023)

04:49 pm (IST): Once again Instagram users (1,2,3,4) are reporting that the Stories icon size is too large.
