Passkeys debuted at WWDC 2022 and was expected to be a big thing in Ventura and iOS 16 after its debut in the older developer preview on previous versions.

Apple claims that Passkeys are significantly more secure and easy to use than passwords. The company also states that these are based on industry standards for account authentication.

They also added that transitioning to passkeys will help users safely access apps and websites across multiple platforms.

However, the feature is still unavailable on the majority of websites. As of now, only 38 websites are supported.

At the time of the standard’s announcement, some of the well-known tech giants like Apple, Google, and Microsoft had pledged to increase their support for the FIDO standard. They claimed that this will fasten the availability of passwordless sign-in.

These new capabilities are expected to become available across Apple, Google, and Microsoft platforms over the course of the coming year.

A few months back, Google announced that it will be bringing together sign-in solutions and passkeys with the release of the new Credential Manager.

The next-generation industry standard for passwordless authentication: Passkeys. Credential Manager brings together passkeys with traditional authentication methods like passwords or Sign in with Google.

Even though Apple had been emphasizing on implementation of this feature for the past year, the new authentication technology still isn’t supported on their website.

Surprisingly, it isn’t the case that only Apple’s official website doesn’t support Passkeys yet. As of now only a limited number of websites have this feature enabled, despite numerous repeated requests from users.

It is also worth mentioning that support for Passkeys is coming soon on the popular password manager 1Password.

We are sincerely hopeful that support for Passkeys will be available on websites soon.

Until then, we’ll keep tabs on the topic where Passkeys are unavailable on the majority of websites and update this article whenever we come across new information.

Update 1 (June 06, 2023)

12:17 pm (IST): In a major security innovation by Google, it was announced that Passkeys can now be used by users of more than 9 million organizations to check in to Google Workspace and Google Cloud accounts.
