[Updated] Google Chrome shows only one search result? Issue escalated for investigation

New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….

Original story (published on July 19, 2022) follows:

In the last decade, Google Chrome has emerged as the world’s most preferred browser. Based on the Chromium project, it also happens to be the core component of Google’s in-house developed Chrome OS.

When it comes to the browser market share, Chrome accounts for more than 65% of internet users worldwide.

That said, Chrome users are now complaining about a new problem where only one search result is shown. Unfortunately, the bug is preventing those affected from seeing the rest of the search results (1,2,3,4,5).

One thing to note here is that the problem only arises when the user is signed in to their Google account. Signing out or switching to incognito mode fixes it temporarily but this might not be practical for many.

You can see in the image below that only the first result is visible when a user makes a search query on Google in Chrome.

For some reason google no longer shows me all the search results but instead only displays the first one. This happened randomly, I did not change any settings. Google works normally in incognito mode and on other Google accounts so I’m unsure why it’s loading this way for my account.

Blocking all cookies seems to fix the problem, but makes it so that I cannot use google services like google drive. I also cleared my cookies, but once I sign into my google account the same problem occurs.

Whenever I look something up using my user account, Google shows one result only. I’ve tried fiddling with the Google Search settings, but no dice… I’ve also tried looking for a “feedback” button, but the site just seems… frozen!

When trying from a different account or my mobile app, things do seem to behave properly, thought. I’ve read somewhere it might be due to a thing called “Google Live Experiments” or something. If so, how do I tell Google to stop messing with me? 😭 Any idea on how to fix this issue? Thanks!

Thankfully, the Public Liaison for Search at Google, Danny Sullivan, commented on a Google Chrome subreddit post and said they have forwarded the issue to the concerned team for further investigation.

Hi from Google Search. Sorry about this — I’ve passed it on for us to check on.

Unfortunately, they did not share any information as to when the bug will be fixed. We hope the developers find out why this is happening and patch it as soon as they can.

As always, we will be keeping an eye out for more information and update this article as and when required so stay tuned.
