New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….

Original story (published on March 2, 2023) follows:

When buying a smartphone, connectivity is one of the key aspects to consider. Currently, most users want their new smartphone to be compatible with the most modern 5G network standards.

However, the mobile network quality is just as important as that of the classic Wi-Fi network. After all, users at home are usually always connected via Wi-Fi.

Sadly, it seems that some Google Pixel 7 users are struggling with a Wi-Fi issue where the network is randomly disconnecting or inconsistent.

Google Pixel 7 Wi-Fi randomly disconnecting or inconsistent for some users

The quality of the Wi-Fi network is being one of the problematic aspects for some Google Pixel 7 users. According to reports, there are random connection drops.

The most common reported situation seems to be the sudden disconnection and reconnection of the mobile device to the Wi-Fi network, with no apparent explanation.

Network issue and wifi connectivity drops in pixel 7 (India)

Usually network speed and connectivity drops even Wi-Fi. Example in a middle of online game or teams call you can notice this everytime. That there sudden drop in network speeds and connectivity including Wi-Fi and gets back again in a minute and again repeats.

The problem does not seem to be related to the standard Wi-Fi used. For instance, the following report indicates that there are problems with their home 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, but not in the 2.4GHz Wi-Fi of other places.

Loosing internet on home WiFi constantly P7P

Hello all, I have this problem in my home WiFi (2.4ghz), phone stays connected to WiFi, but it frequently loosing internet connection for about 5 to 10 seconds. Now i am testing 5ghz home WiFi and it seems to work without problems, also office and gym WiFi working good, and they are both 2.4.

This may point to a possible unknown incompatibility of the Google Pixel 7 with some routers. However, this is just unconfirmed speculation for now.

Also, some reports suggest that the problem appears under high network load. That is, while downloading big files at high speed, watching high-resolution videos, etc.

Interestingly, the same issue was spotted on the Google Pixel 6 Pro some time ago.

The issue is basically the same as the one I referenced on pixel 6 pro. Especially this log is very similar to mine: https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/218516110#comment185

Issue already escalated for months, potential workarounds

It’s worth pointing out that the issue is not exactly new. There are reports of similar situations for at least 5 months, so it could be a matter of hardware and not software.

The issue was initially acknowledged by Google team back in October (2022). Months later (February 24, 2023) it was escalated again, and still no ETA for a fix.

In the meantime, there are a couple of potential workarounds that could help you mitigate the Pixel 7 Wi-Fi issues. First, you can modify the current Wi-Fi band from your router settings:

Ok played around with my router settings.

80mhz wide 5GHz no issues. 160mhz channel width and it starts displaying the issues right away. Seems to be an issue with 160mhz wide 5ghz band.

Right now have my router limited to just 80mhz width and haven’t had a single drop in 2 weeks.

Also, another user managed to resolve the issue by changing the router firmware. This strengthens the hypothesis that the Google Pixel 7 have some incompatibility with the current software of some routers.

I found there was an issue with the router I was using. Changed the firmware. The issue seems resolved. 🙂

Update 3 (Jul. 03, 2023)

05:50 pm (IST): Here’s another workaround

When the Pixel is in range of a product with an open network it seems to try to connect to that product automatically, in my case there were two printers and one Google Chromecast that appeared as “Open” in the wifi list.
What I did was waited until those devices appeared on the WiFI list and then quickly pressed on them to connect to them, when the gear appeared showing that I could make adjustments to the connection I switched off “Auto Connect”.
