Google recently released the May 2023 update for Pixel smartphones that brings bug fixes to some known issues and patches some vulnerabilities in Android.

For instance, the patch addresses an issue that caused the lock screen UI elements to overlap with home screen launcher interface.

Along with this, the recent update also introduces improvements to the touch screen response. However, some are experiencing issues.

Google app causing battery drain and overheating issues

According to reports (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10), multiple Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 6 owners are experiencing battery drain and overheating issues after installing the May 2023 update.

Users assert that their phone now gets hot just within a few minutes of usage. Due to this, they find it difficult to hold the device in their hands.

Along with this, one is unable to click pictures or videos and capture moments with the camera app as it gets disabled when the phone overheats. Notably, the phone heats up quickly when charging as well.

Others also complain that the battery drains quickly even when not in use. Allegedly, the battery life dropped from 6 hours to just 3 hours for some after installing the latest patch.

One of those affected claims the Google app and Android System Intelligence are the main culprits of this issue. It’s noteworthy that some Pixel 7a users are also facing these issues as well.

And it’s a possibility that this happens because of the recent Google app update or the May 2023 patch or both. But, since there’s no official word, we can’t be sure at the moment.

Users have tried contacting Google’s support team in this regard but haven’t been successful.

While Google hasn’t officially responded to the matter yet, we did come across a potential workaround that might help solve your problem.

It is recommended that you uninstall the latest update for the Google app until the problem is resolved.

We do hope that the company will resolve the battery drain and overheating issues on the Pixel 7, Pixel 7a, Pixel 6, and Pixel 6a soon.
