Original story (published on April 6, 2023) follows:

DoorDash has been facing scrutiny recently as reports emerge that drivers are allegedly declining orders without what they consider as fat tips.

Some Dashers are even soliciting extra tips based on the delivery distance, with others giving other reasons to try and get customers to offer more money for tips.

DoorDash drivers allegedly declining orders without fat tips

Customers have been complaining (1,2,3) that their orders are not being accepted or are taking a long time to be picked up, leading to understandable frustration.

The root cause of this issue seems to be the drivers’ ability to accept or decline delivery orders. Apparently, some drivers are reportedly declining orders if they do not have a tip or if the tip is not large enough.

In some cases, Dashers are asking customers to tip more if they feel that the tip is not directly proportional to the delivery distance.

However, not all Dashers are giving the same reasons for soliciting for extra tips.

Meanwhile, there are some businesses that reportedly keep part of the tip without notifying the delivery person, leading to further confusion.

So I asked a customer(one who always does hand it to me, and I have gotten to know) once why they gave me a $0.03 tip? They were like, no we tipped $$5.03, to round the sale to an even number. I suspect the restaurant took the $5.00 and didn’t notice the $0.03 of the tip. That’s my opinion on why you see those.

While Dashers are technically considered independent contractors, DoorDash has stated that it does not condone the solicitation of extra tips.

The company’s website states that dashers are paid fairly based on the time and effort it takes to complete a delivery and that tips are optional.

The company has also faced criticism for its tipping policy in the past.

In 2019, DoorDash came under fire for using tips to subsidize drivers’ base pay. The company eventually changed its policy and now says that every dollar a customer tips will be an extra dollar in their Dasher’s pocket.

It’s worth noting that not all DoorDash drivers engage in these practices, and many do their best to provide excellent services regardless of the tip amount or whether there’s no tip.
