Google Chrome keeps reopening closed tabs on some Android devices

Some Google Chrome users (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9) are facing an issue where previously closed tabs keep reopening on their Android phones.

Apparently, whenever one launches the browser, their old browsing session and a new tab open simultaneously. And to add to the frustration, this even happens when one has manually closed all tabs.

Unfortunately, tinkering with the browser’s settings or uninstalling and reinstalling the app could not help resolve the problem.

The issue has been persistent for the past few weeks and mostly affects Google Pixel 7 users.

Potential workaround

Fortunately, we did come across a potential workaround that may help solve your problem. A Redditor recommends that you do the back gesture or hit the back button while in the tabs menu to be taken back to the home screen.

After that, you simply need to close the browser. By doing so, the old tabs will not reopen upon launching the browser.

Alternatively, you can try toggling the homepage option from Chrome’s advanced settings as described here.
