Last year, Microsoft unveiled Firmware Attack Surface Reduction (FASR), a new security feature for Windows 11 devices.

It helps secure one’s Windows machine by restricting common malware and exploiting techniques on firmware.

FASR also supports two boot paths, namely, the Certified boot path, and the Custom boot path which differ in their execution policies.

And recently, Microsoft introduced this feature on the Windows Defender app for Windows 11 via an update. However, it looks like some are experiencing some issues because of the feature.

Windows 11 crashing or blue screen of death (BSOD) issues when playing games

According to reports (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10), multiple Windows 11 users are experiencing crashing or blue screen of death (BSOD) issues after having enabled the FASR feature.

The crashes mostly occur when one is trying to launch a game on their Windows machine. However, there are some cases where users have experienced crashes after installing graphics drivers or updates as well.

Notably, some get the ‘DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL‘ error while others get a ‘video dxgkrnl fatal error‘ after a crash.

One of those affected claims that no matter what game they launch, it either ends up crashing to the desktop instantly or leads to a BSOD. Due to this, they have been unable to play games for the past few days.

On the flip side, another user alleges to be experiencing crashing issues after playing games for a while.

Users are now requesting the developers to resolve this issue so that they can keep their Windows machines secure and play games simultaneously.

Possible explanation

It is quite possible that a game’s code might be getting blocked and isn’t being allowed to execute. This could be due to the in-compatibility of the Anti-cheat software with the FASR feature.

Update 1 (June 6, 2023)

05:46 pm (IST): A well known blogger (Artem Russakovskii) tried to resolve the BSOD issue, but couldn’t manage to fix it. Moreover, they’ve asked Microsoft developer team to work with him in order to find a solution for this bug.
