Original story (published on April 18, 2023) follows:

Microsoft Family Safety offers parents a set of handy features to track and moderate their child’s digital consumption and keep check on their safety online and offline.

However, after the latest iOS update, some parents or guardians are unable to use the Family Safety features due to severe crashing issues.

Microsoft Family Safety crashing on iOS 16.4.1

According to reports (1,2,3,4,5,6), the Microsoft Family Safety app keeps crashing repeatedly on devices running iOS 16.4.1. It appears that the latest iOS update has somehow broken the app’s functionality.

When opened, the app tries to load data for a few seconds but then crashes preventing users from accessing any of the useful tools or analytics. Some have taken to Twitter and the official Microsoft forum to raise their concerns.

It seems that common troubleshooting steps like reinstalling the app and restarting the device don’t do much to fix the problem.

While the majority of reports are from iOS 16.4.1 users, there are some on the previous versions that experience the same crashing issue. The problem is also present in iOS 16.5 beta.

I don’t have any further troubleshooting to offer. There are no open issues published officially for Family safety app for IOS 16.4.1.

Unfortunately, Microsoft developers are seemingly unaware of the problem. Independent Advisors on the Microsoft forum confirmed that they haven’t received any information regarding the bug from the team.

Potential workaround

Luckily, we did come across a workaround that helped resolve the issue for a user. It’s worth noting that the app may start crashing again even after following these steps.
