The iPhone 15 series arrives later this year to take the seat that the iPhone 14 family has been occupying since last September.

With plenty of suppliers involved, a lot has already been leaked regarding what to expect about the iPhone 15 series. For instance, it has been reported that a USB-C port will replace the Lightning port on all models.

There are also rumors that the notch will have no place on the face of the iPhone 15 series, and instead the Dynamic Island will be the default. This will mark an end to a “feature” that has been here since the iPhone X.

With the in-house modem still in development at least until 2024, it has also been claimed Apple will stick to Qualcomm as the supplier for the iPhone 15 modem chips with either of TSMC’s A16 or A17 SoC depending on the variant.

As always, the A17 chipset is expected to reduce power consumption and improve battery life. But the A16 will remain unchanged from what appeared in the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max.

This may imply that the standard iPhone 15 and 15 Plus may still suffer from overheating issues owing to the A16 chipset. Fortunately, the processor isn’t the only hardware that can be tweaked to reduce overheating.

Rumors also allege that Apple will use a more power-efficient OLED display driver chip fabricated using the 28nm process in order to reduce power consumption and thus improve iPhone 15 battery life.

Besides improved power consumption management, there’s one more thing I hope this chip partly addresses — the persistent overheating issues that have plagued the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models since launch.

The display panel is one of the most power consuming hardware of any smartphone, because that’s where the main interaction between you and the phone takes place.

Granted, it should be satisfying to see that Apple is reportedly working to reduce display energy consumption on the iPhone 15 series.

If Apple can find a way to reduce the iPhone 15 screen power consumption, we could easily be looking at greatly reduced heat generation which should in turn ensure the device isn’t overheating as much as the iPhone 14.

In addition to managing display energy consumption, the iPhone 15 could also do with more efficient cooling to avoid a repeat of similar iPhone 14 overheating issues.

A JerryRigEverything teardown video revealed that the iPhone 14 has a metallic plate just underneath the screen, protecting the circuits and battery from any potential physical damage. But there’s more to it.

In case you missed a class, metals are good heat conductors, so having this plate just between the screen and battery should help speed up the cooling process whenever the phone is overheating.

But even with the gigantic size of the plate, owners of the iPhone 14 and 14 Pro are still experiencing overheating issues to date, multiple iOS 16 updates later.

This is where Apple needs to step up. Although not sure what materials were used to make the metallic plate inside the iPhone 14, the upcoming iPhone 15 could do with a better choice of materials for improved heat dissipation.

Copper and aluminum are known to be among the best heat conductors, and Apple has often used the latter for iPhone frames. However, the former should make a better cooling system inside the iPhone 15 series.

Alternatively, Apple could explore some of the modern-day smartphone cooling systems that we’ve already seen in some Android phones, among them liquid cooling or copper vapor chamber cooling system seen in gaming phones.

All in all, there are still several months before the iPhone 15 arrives, so a lot can change between now and then. Hopefully, addressing the persistent iPhone 14 overheating issues will be high on the agenda for the new series.
