Peloton is being accused of greed by some Bike and Bike+ owners for sending out a ‘Pedal Maintenance Notification’ nudging them to replace their pedals annually.
However, there’s more to this notification than meets the eye.
Peloton notification for annual pedals replacement mistaken for greed
In 2020, Peloton was forced to recall 54,000 pedals of bikes sold between 2013 and 2016 after being slapped with a lawsuit.
The case involved a laceration hazard caused by the pedals breaking off during use, which led to multiple injuries.
Following the settlement of the case, Peloton published an article on its support website advising Bike/Bike+ owners to regularly change their pedals, preferably annually.
Despite this, it seems that not all owners are aware of the need for regular pedal replacement.
As a result, Peloton has started sending pop-ups titled ‘Pedal Maintenance Notification’ to users urging them to replace their pedals annually.
This is a gradual rollout, with users receiving the alert in batches.
Some Bike/Bike+ owners who have had their pedals for over two years and feel that they are still in good shape have expressed dissatisfaction with the reminder.
I have 1200 rides over 20 months and weighed anywhere between 235-275lbs and never had an issue. Just inspect them and make sure to adjust the tension as needed. This is a scare tactic money grab

Had my bike for 2 yrs now and never replaced my pedals. I’ve been riding MTB bikes most of my life and haven’t replaced my pedals in a decade. Is this really necessary to replace pedals yearly?

No that’s how they make money

However, it is important to note that this is not a money-making scheme for Peloton, but a cushion against potential lawsuits and recalls.
By reminding owners to change their pedals after a year, Peloton can protect itself against potential losses in the future.
This is not only good for the company but also for Bike/Bike+ owners, as regular pedal replacement can help prevent injuries and accidents.
It is worth noting that pedals are subject to wear and tear over time, especially with frequent use. As such, regular maintenance is essential to ensure safe and effective performance.
While Peloton’s annual pedal replacement reminder may come across as a nuisance to some users, it is ultimately for their safety.
