04:00 pm (IST): Reports floating around X indicate that the problem has recently popped up once again and is affecting users on a wide scale. Instagram is yet to publicly comment on this recurring issue yet. However, there are a few troubleshooting steps that you could try out:

  • Tap the three dots on an Explore post you don’t like, and choose ‘Not Interested.’ Do this several times to teach the algorithm your preferences.
  • Clear Cache: This varies by device, but here’s how it’s done generally:
    • Android: Settings > Apps > Instagram > Storage & Cache > Clear Cache.
    • iOS: You usually have to uninstall and reinstall the app to clear cache on iPhones.
  • Remove recent likes or comments on any posts that are related to the kind of content you do not wish to see.
  • Interact (Like, Comment, Share) with more posts that you wish to see similar content in the Explore page. Doing this should signal to Instagram the type of content you prefer.

It’s worth noting that the tips shared above are just potential solutions that might help you get your Instagram Explore page back in order. It’s also possible that Instagram intentionally tries pushing new content to users every now and then in order to boost overall engagement on the platform. But until Instagram makes any official statement on the matter, it’s all just speculation.

Update 2 (March 1, 2023)

08:55 pm (IST): Many Instagram users have once again taken to Twitter to report (1,2,3,4,5,6,7) that their ‘Explore’ page has been reset and shows nature, art or other random content.

10:50 am (IST): Some users are again reporting (1, 2) the issue where Explore page is showing nature images.

With more than 1.4 billion users worldwide, Instagram is the fourth most popular social media network on the planet and the fifth most visited website on the internet.

Last year, it generated $47.6 billion in revenue, accounting for almost 50% of Facebook’s total revenue.

While things seem to be going good on the financial side of things, users often face issues like ‘Add Yours’ Chain Story sticker not working and some users unable to post Stories using camera.

That said, many Instagram users are now complaining that the Explore page is resetting or showing nature images (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10).

According to those affected, the platform ignores all content preferences and suddenly starts showing generic content like you would see on a fresh account.

With some reports dating back months, it looks like the problem has been affecting users for quite some time now.

Why is the algorithm so bad?? I don’t even know how I keep using that app. The algorithm was already bad but it’s gotten worse. A good chunk of my explore page is hyper-specific stuff I’m not terribly interested in and (gross warning) they show me a video of a cow pooping every time even tho I have NEVER clicked on it. And they show me the Instagram girls even tho I’m a straight female and have never looked any of those accounts up.

My insta explore page seems to have reset?? Pretty much when I went onto Instagram my explore page for some reason just started showing me nature pics and photography and stuff like that which I never had before, is this happening to anyone else and does anyone know how to fix it?

While Instagram is yet to officially comment on the matter, we stumbled across a few workarounds that might help fix the Explore page resetting issue.

The first one requires users to head over to the Explore page and refresh it by pulling from the top of the page a couple of times like you would refresh your feed (five to six times).

If this did not fix the problem, try restarting the app since it usually fixes the problem.

We hope Instagram developers soon find out the root cause of the issue and resolve it in the coming days. As always, we will be keeping tabs on the matter and let you know when we have more information to share so stay tuned.
