Developed by Infinity Ward, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II is a popular first-person shooter game. It recently received the Season 2 update, which fixed some of the known issues and made many gameplay adjustments.

The patch also introduces a new operator, ‘Ronin’, and five new weapons, of which three are bundled with the Battle Pass.

A new personal watercraft vehicle has been added as well, which allows one to engage in fast-paced aquatic combat. However, some are facing crashing issues after the recent update.

COD: Modern Warfare 2 crashing during Season 2 cinematic on startup

According to reports (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10), some players are facing an issue where the game crashes on startup during cinematics or cutscenes after installing the recent Season 2 update.

The issue is affecting players across multiple platforms, with some having trouble launching the game.

On Battle.net, the game allegedly crashes as soon as it loads the message of the day. Not even running the game in safe mode gets rid of the problem.

Managed to get past the cutscene, but it crashes consistently after about 5 seconds into the menu. Can’t even get to the settings.

Everytime I try to load up it crashes as soon as the season 2 cinematic intro starts playing, un able to skip it either.

Some have even tried restarting the game, tweaking the graphics settings, verifying the integrity of files, updating, uninstalling and re-installing it but all in vain.

Fortunately, Infinity Ward has officially acknowledged the issue and is investigating it. Although, an official ETA for the bug fix has not been provided.

We did come across a potential workaround that may help you get rid of the cinematic crashing problem on your Windows PC.

It is recommended that you uninstall the campaign portion from the MW2 installation and then proceed with the game.

However, the troubles of Modern Warfare 2 players don’t end here, as some (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10) are unable to get their Season 1 Battle Pass tokens transferred to Season 2.

Due to this, gamers are frustrated and annoyed and have taken to the web forums to express their concerns on the matter.

Gamers on web forums recommend that you earn or purchase a token, after which the previous balance will get reflected properly.

Having said that, we will keep tabs on the problems where Modern Warfare 2 Season 2 is crashing during the cinematic playback and the Season 1 Battle Pass tokens are missing.

Update 1 (February 17, 2023)

05:04 pm (IST): A redditor has offered a potential world that could help you avoid the crashing issue on start up:

Boot the game, and wait for the loading box to appear. As soon as it says “loading datacenters”, hit cancel immediately. Now just stop what you’re doing and watch that shaders percentage on the top left. Wait for it to finish and disappear, then click restart on the window on the screen and you’ll be good to go
