Dark and Darker crashing after Playtest 4 update, but there's a potential workaround

Dark and Darker developers recently released the Playtest Stage #4 update that adds new systems and features, including new party-building tools and a solo adventurer experience.

However, some are disappointed because of random crashing issues with the game.

Some players (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10) are facing an issue where the game crashes to the desktop on multiple occasions. They also allege that they don’t even witness lagging or any other performance drops before it crashes.

Apparently, the game exists on its own if any input is made after creating a character.

Some are also experiencing instant crashes whenever the game is launched. However, some claim that they are able to make their way to the title screen but after that it will automatically close within seconds.

Never had this bug in the previous playtest. Game crashes on launch. Once it got far enough to display you must run the game on steam. Anybody have any fixes?

My game crashes when I try to launch. It did not crashed on last playtest. I have directx updated and I’m on windows 10 and I have NVIDIA GeForce GTS 450 with graphics updated. I don’t have MSI Afterburner installed.

Some (1,2) also get the ‘Unhandled Exception: EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION’ error message.

Those affected have tried restarting their computer, updating the graphics drivers, testing the integrity of game files, uninstalling and re-downloading the game, but to no avail.

Ironmace Games has officially responded to the matter and is aware of the issue, with a hotfix to be released at some point to address the glitch.

Fortunately, we did come across some potential workarounds that may help solve the problem for some. It has been recommended that you turn off third-party tools like MSI Afterburner or RivaTuner.

Also, AMD graphics card owners can try disabling the in-game overlay or some settings such as anti-lag and sharpening.

That said, we’ll keep an eye on the issue where Dark and Darker is crashing for some after installing the Playtest 4 update and let you know when something noteworthy comes up.
