New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….

Original story (published on September 21, 2022) follows:

Using a Lightning Digital AV Adapter, iPhone users can mirror what is displayed on their device’s screen — apps, presentations, films, series, and videos — to their HDMI-equipped TV, projector, or other compatible displays.

This is done by connecting a Lightning Digital AV Adaptor to the Lightning port on your phone and then to a TV or projector via an HDMI cable.

iOS 16 update breaks HDMI functionality

However, some iPhone users say that after installing the iOS 16 update on their devices, it breaks the HDMI functionality for them (1,2,3,4,5).

Users claim that this issue arises when they connect their iPhone to a Lightning Digital AV adapter and mirror a video from a streaming platform to their TV.

In certain cases, users report that while the video playback appears to be okay, there is absolutely no audio output. However, when they disconnected the adapter from their iPhones, the audio can be heard.

Many iPhone users indicate that after installing the iOS 16 update, the HDMI functionality stopped working for them instantly even though it had been working properly before that.

I upgraded my iPhone SE to iOS 16 and noticed that my Lightning Digital AV Adapter is no longer functioning properly. It either displays a picture without sound or it gives me sound without picture. Went through all the possible checks but no luck. I’ve tried a total of 3 Lightning Digital AV Adapters and all behave the same.

I’ve been using the hdmi lightning accessory to connect my iPhone 13 Pro Max to my tv to watch crave tv and Netflix. Im doing it this way so that I can stream at a lower quality and use less data. This was working flawlessly until I updated to iOS 16. Now when I connect the video works but there is no audio.

Others report that they get no video output from streaming apps such as Netflix and Prime Video on their TVs (1,2,3).

I updated my iPhone 13 to iOS 16 and now am unable to watch Netflix and Hulu on tv via lightning to hdmi connector. The first time I tried it said the accessory firmware had to be downloaded but then that message went away. On Hulu it plays but no sound. On Netflix it says playing on tv but doesn’t. It shows the phone screen on tv but will not play shows.

This issue is not specific to any streaming platform as users have reported it on various different streaming services such as Netflix, Discovery+, Amazon Prime, Hulu, and more.

Unfortunately, there is no official acknowledgment of this issue from the Apple team. Furthermore, we haven’t come across any workarounds as well.

Hopefully, Apple figures out why iPhone users are getting no audio or video when using the HDMI functionality and fixes the glitch at the earliest.

We will update this story as events unfold.

Update 1 (January 25, 2023)

04:58 pm (IST): Some users have confirmed (1, 2, 3) that this issue has been resolved after updating to iOS 16.3.
