Google Maps not staying active in background or keeps refreshing on iOS for some, issue escalated

Google Maps is a popular mapping platform that offers satellite-based navigation, street maps, and 360° interactive panoramic views of streets.

Thanks to its ability to monitor real-time traffic conditions, it makes it easier for one to plan their travel route accordingly.

Even though Google Maps is useful for millions of users, some iPhone owners are facing difficulties while navigating with the app.

According to reports (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8), multiple iOS device owners are experiencing an issue where the app keeps refreshing or restarting after leaving the app.

They allege that the app reloads and loses active destinations each time it goes to the background, even for short intervals.

Due to this glitch, some are finding it difficult to commute to different or far-off destinations. This bug has also made the app less useful for some.

The issue has been persistent for the past few weeks and the developers have not yet fixed it. Because of this some feel frustrated and irritated.

I use google maps daily but I rarely start the navigation, I just use it to show me the journey. Every time I exit the app and come back, it refreshes and I have to look for the directions again. How do I stop this?

Some have even tried resetting the location and privacy settings for the app, restarting their smartphone, and even tried to re-install Google Maps but to no effect.

It is interesting to note that some iOS users (1,2,3) are experiencing a similar behavior on other Google apps as well.

A Redditor claims that the issue has popped up after a recent iOS update.

Fortunately, Google Maps support team on Twitter has assured that the feedback will be passed on to the right team for further investigation.
