New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….
Original story (published on December 6, 2022) follows:
One of the features that sets the new iPad Pro apart from its predecessor is the Apple Pencil Hover experience.
Apple Pencil Hover is a critical component of pen-based graphics work for artists who use their iPad to sketch, draw, or create graphics.
The concept is that a user can preview how a brush will land on a painting before applying paint. However, there appears to be a problem with this feature when used with Procreate.
Procreate lag while hovering with Apple Pencil
According to reports, Procreate users are experiencing lag while hovering with the Apple Pencil (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9).
Illustrators claim that they can’t sketch for more than a few minutes before Procreate freezes or crashes. The most serious issue that usually always results in a crash is trying to use the color fill.
The affected users report that there is a delay in their actions when they choose a color from the color fill and proceed to their painting to apply it.
In another scenario in which users draw quick lines (like sketching), the lines are often very thin or do not appear at all.
However, there is no such lag when a user applies the colors using their fingers. Also, the pencil works perfectly fine on Adobe Fresco and Notes.
I am on iPad Pro M2, latest Procreate build. I notice a lag (2sec or more) when picking a color with the pencil (top right) before the wheel pop up. But not with my finger though.

My gen 1 pencil on my 10.5” iPad Pro seems to lag a lot even on only 1 layer when I’m colouring, and the problem seems to be only in Procreate. But for you and only you, I will upgrade to the latest M2 pro.

Issue acknowledged
As it turns out, Procreate support has acknowledged the issue and said that they are working on it. However, they did not share any timeframe of when it will be fixed.
Potential workaround
Also, Procreate support has suggested a potential workaround that might fix the issue for you. It involves disabling the Palm Support feature:
If you’re on an M2 iPad Pro, try heading to Settings > Procreate and completely disable the Palm Support feature in here.
For general lag, try clearing up space on your iPad and restarting it.

We hope that developers will quickly fix the problem so that designers may resume sketching with their Apple Pencil without lag. When they do, we will update this article accordingly, so stay tuned.
Update 1 (Jan. 17, 2023)
12:14 pm (IST): To a recent report related to the bug, the Procreate team responded that it has not been resolved yet. That said, an ETA for the fix is still missing.
