[Updated] iOS 16 Camera app reportedly 'lagging, freezing or not working' for a section of users

iPhone users have been using iOS 16 for several weeks now. The new OS brings multiple improvements and additions in various sections.

However, the initial update rollout was also riddled with problems. For instance, many users reported severe battery drain, missing notifications, among others.

Cameras on iPhones updated to the latest version of iOS also experienced a worrying stabilizer rattling issue. Although this last bug was fixed, there are still traces in the form of a clicking sound.

Now, multiple users report that the iOS 16 Camera app is lagging, freezing or not working for them.

According to multiple reports, the iPhone Camera app performance noticeably worsened for some users after iOS 16 update.

The most common issue seems to be noticeable lag that starts when opening the iOS 16 Camera app. For some, the lag even extends to the entire device for a while after exiting the camera app.

Laggy iOS camera app anyone?

Have any of y’all noticed the camera app lagging your phone out? It’s only the default camera app that does this, any other third party app that uses the camera is unaffected. I have an iphone xr, but i’ve seen this happen with newer iphones as well.

There are also reports from iOS 16.0.2 users, the most recent stable update available to date.

Is anyone else experiencing a camera lag on the new iPhone 14 pro. My 13 pro with 16.02 was instantaneous when open, however with the new phone it’s stays on black for 5-10 seconds before I can use the camera. In addition, when trying to use camera through message or WhatsApp, the camera doesn’t even start.

The iOS 16 Camera is getting frozen or stuck for some users. As the whole camera app seems affected, it also reportedly occurs when taking selfies.

iPhone 13 Pro Max has very laggy front camera preview but front Video mode is fine? IOS 16 software bug?

When I want to take a photo with the front cam, the preview i can see on display has like 30 – 20 fps, and is extremely laggy and blurry when I move the phone around as I wanna take a shot of smth.

Unfortunately, there is no workaround to help fix or mitigate iOS 16 camera app performance issues. There is also no official acknowledgment from Apple, so it is not known if they are aware.

IST 12:19 pm: According to GSMArena, Apple has released iOS 16.0.3 update that comes with fixes for various issues including Camera app lagging, freezing or not working bug.

IST 09:33 pm: It seems that neither iOS 16.0.3 nor any subsequent updates have completely fixed the ‘camera freezing’ issue as related reports keep popping up (1, 2, 3, 4).
