New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….

Original story (published on March 21, 2021) follows:

Epic Games launched Fortnite in 2017, and is currently the most popular Battle Royale game in the industry. It boasts a strong daily active player base from all over the world.

The game constantly receives content through updates. For instance, Fortnite recently received the Chapter 3 Season 2 update with new content.

However, multiple reports indicate that the Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 2 update also brought FPS drops and a stuttering graphics issue related to DirectX 12.

Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 2 update brought DirectX 12 related FPS drops

Many Fortnite players have been reporting in recent hours the noticeable FPS drops they are experiencing following the latest Chapter 3 Season 2 update.

15 fps in chapter 3 season 2 on a good pc

my pc has a rx 580 8gb and 20 gb of ram and yet im only getting 15 fps at max. i tried changing the settings to the lowest possible and it did nothing. last season i was able to get 120 fps on medium settings. i appears that the game is trying to run off the cpu and not the gpu because the gpu util is at 1% and cpu is at 50 % just for fortnite plus the gpu is using nearly no power.

Anyone else is just having fps problem after today update? (PC)

Ryzen 5 2600, 16Gb Ram and RTX 2070 8Gb, Always played at 2560×1440 with everything on High (DLSS on Quality) and always have a good performance between 70 and 110 fps, now is unplayable, FPS is always bellow 40 fps with drops to 5 fps, looks like powerpoint, anyone is also having this FPS problem?

It seems that everything is related to the use of the more modern DirectX 12 API instead of the previous DirectX 11. The update may have introduced resource usage issues.

directx12 mode insanely slow

Playing on RTX 2060 and directx12, or at least used to, because there is so much fps drops and delays in it after the season update. fixed when switching to directx11. fps drops from around 160 to 60, so much input delay, and can’t load the textures fast. also, the game crashes regularly. It wasn’t like this in the last season.

Some workarounds that could help

That said, there are a couple of workarounds that reportedly help resolve these performance issues. The first one is to do the following:

if your on dx12 switxh to dx11 or performance mode, then restart your computer and fortnite and should fix the issue. i did this for myself and have helped many people today with this issue

If the above doesn’t work, as an alternative workaround you can try turning Ray-Tracing on and off in the game’s graphics settings.

There is still no official acknowledgment on the issue from Epic Games. We will update this story once new details regarding the matter emerge.

Update 1 (March 22, 2022)

01:13 pm (IST): Fortnite support on Twitter has acknowledged this issue and said that they are working on a fix.

Moreover, support has also provided a potential workaround for the affected users to try in the meantime.

As a temporary workaround, switching to DirectX 11 or toggling Raytracing “ON” then “OFF” may mitigate issues until we resolve this. (Source)

Update 2 (March 25, 2022)
