NVIDIA Shield TV ‘storage space too low’
According to reports, NVIDIA Shield TV owners continue to receive low storage error warnings even if they have not used the device’s storage capacity (1,2,3,4).
NVIDIA Shield TV owners are experiencing a storage bug that keeps eating up too much space, resulting in an annoying ‘storage space too low’ or ‘critically low on space’ warning.
Those affected allege that they use an external storage drive for all installed apps in order to keep their internal storage free. However, the storage on their NVIDIA Shield TV continues to fill up.
The bug appears to impact both the NVIDIA Shield TV 2017 and 2019 versions, but some owners of the 2015 model have also reported it.
I am using a 128GB stick as adopted storage and all installed apps are on the external drive. Back after the 9.01 update, I would see the message showing running low on storage. I made sure nothing was recording or using up storage (viewed in file X-Plore file manager). Space would just slowly disappear on internal storage, even after multiple resets.

Since a few months I’m getting the “Storage space too low” error. Searched this reddit, but nothing helped. Hadn’t used Plex in a while, but somehow the PMS storage was set to internal. So I migrated back to the external HDD and the error was gone for a couple of days. But it just keeps coming back and now I’m at the point that I need to remove apps I actually use.

The apparent solution to this storage issue is to factory reset your NVIDIA Shield TV. However, it pops up again after a couple or so weeks.
Issue under investigation
According to Mishaal Rahman, developers are already aware of this issue and it’s currently under investigation. However, no ETA for a fix has been shared.
That said, we’ll keep track of the situation and will post an update if and when there are any further developments regarding the matter.
