DJI’s Osmo Action 3 is a compact action camera that features a quick-release design for vertical or horizontal shooting, compatibility with low temperatures, and long-lasting battery life.

It also consistently delivers decent photos and videos for its price. However, it seems that the current minimum-focus distance is causing some issues for its users.

I had high hopes for Action 2 but I was pretty disappointed. Even higher hopes for Action 3 and even more disappointed. It seems my GoPro 7 still need to work one more year before being retired.

Performed a simular test, having the same issue with focus and sharpness like all others, I would wonder if that could be fixed with a firmware upgrade. Anyone believing that there are any oa3 cams which are not having that issue?

There are multiple reports on the DJI forum exhibiting users frustration where the Osmo Action 3 is unable to capture the real details in both videos and photos.

The team even reportedly rolled out a beta firmware update to address the issue but that hardly did anything to help fix it.

There are some users who now feel that the old firmware was better than the latest beta as it at least gave them an option of sharpening pictures according to their preference.

In some ways – the old firmware is better than the beta – as you can apply sharpening in post as you desire. So what DJI Support should do is make this an option in the Menu vs leaving the user no choice but to always over sharpen.

According to most reports, the beta update automatically boosts the sharpness which many feel is unnecessary and can also be done in post-production.

Apparently, the action camera has a fixed focus lens and that could potentially be the reason why not much can be done with the software in order to improve the focus.

Alleged response from DJI

A user allegedly received feedback from the DJI team saying that they are currently investigating the issue where images and videos shot by the Osmo Action 3 have soft focus.

Affected users can only wait for the company to come up with a permanent resolution.

We’ll keep tabs on the issue and update the article when something noteworthy comes up.
