[Updated] iOS 16 update wallpaper Depth Effect not working or grayed out, and here's why (potential workaround inside)
New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….
Original story (published on September 14, 2022) follows:
Apple’s just-released iOS 16 implements a series of new and exciting features to your iPhone’s Lock Screen. It also lets you customize the look of your Lock Screen with impressive new wallpapers.
Users can further personalize them with the Depth Effect feature that adds an illusion of depth to Lock Screen wallpapers.
When the said effect is applied to wallpaper, Lock Screen elements like the clock make space for the subject’s placement. However, it seems that the Depth Effect option is currently not accessible for a lot of users.
iOS 16 update wallpaper Depth Effect not working
The Depth Effect option on wallpaper is currently not working or grayed out for many iPhone users.
Why is the depth effect option greyed out while I try to set a wallpaper? It’s the same with all portrait photos on my device.
Hi how can I best make a photo with depth effect out of normal photos? Or is that only possible with the portrait function?
According to one of the reports, Depth Effect works fine with portrait photos but stops working with the new iOS 16 wallpapers.
A possible explanation for this could be the requirement of a clear and distinct subject in the image for the effect to work properly.
There are also some who believe that the Depth Effect disappears after adding a widget on the Lock Screen.
I’m using one of the Astronomy wallpapers which features a depth effect with the time and earth. However, when putting a widget on the Lock Screen, this effect disappears. Is there any way to ‘fix’ this?
As the Depth Effect gets disabled when widgets are added, users can simply try removing them from the Lock Screen.
Unfortunately, Apple hasn’t acknowledged the issue related to the Depth Effect option yet. But, we hope that the team comes up with a fix soon.
We’ll keep tabs on further developments on the issue and update the article as and when something noteworthy comes up.
Update 1 (September 15, 2022)
12:27 pm (IST): Apple has released iOS 16.1 beta for testers and unfortunately, it does not bring any changes for the Depth Effect on wallpapers and it still works the same way.
Update 2 (September 16, 2022)
Users can try positioning the image by applying different zoom levels or moving it around the clock. However, this only works for those who aren’t using widgets.
Update 3 (September 19, 2022)
04:37 pm (IST): Here’s a workaround suggested by a Redditor that worked for some users. Hence, you can also give it a try and see if it works.
Workaround: Thats the link to the image. Another method if using the Reddit app on your phone is hit share on the post, go to copy link, open browser, paste the link, go to the source image, long press, save to photos. I tested it with Safari and it worked through that. (Source)
Update 4 (September 20, 2022)
Update 5 (September 21, 2022)
03:28 pm (IST): Apple has released iOS 16 beta 2 update. However, it doesn’t bring any improvements on how Depth Effect feature works.
