Magic: The Gathering Arena (MTG Arena) is a digital version of the iconic 1990s Magic collectible trading cards game.

Developed by Wizards Digital Games Studio, it is currently available as a free-to-play game on Android, iOS, macOS, and Windows.

However, many MTG Arena players are experiencing an annoying problem that prevents them from enjoying the game.

MTG Arena unresponsive or freezes after sacrificing a card or targeting with a magic

As per several reports, MTG Arena players are facing an issue where the game freezes or becomes completely unresponsive after sacrificing a card or targeting with a magic (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9).

This issue starts when a player on their turn in the game, tries to activate a magic card targeting an opponent’s card or sacrificing/discarding a card.

After this, instead of displaying a prompt, MTG Arena freezes or becomes unresponsive until the turn timer expires and the player loses their turn (the match passes to the next phase).

This issue only appeared after the latest update to the mobile version of the game and does not affect gameplay on PC (Windows and macOS).

Is voltage surge bugged or am I missing something? Couldn’t cast it the entire game, nor could I discard it with a blood token. Every time I tried, I timed out and auto passed the turn

Voltage Surge is broken on mobile as of this bug fix update. When you go to cast it it WILL NOT resolve. You will be locked into a timeout and lose your turn or just pass priority. Your mana will untap and the card will just sit in your hand. I’m on an Iphone 11 max. It’s happened 5 times now without fail.

This problem is making it difficult for players to enjoy the game. Some say they tried using generic troubleshooting methods such as clearing cache and reinstalling the game, but nothing seems to help right now.

Official acknowledgment

Fortunately, Wizards support has acknowledged the issue and said that they are currently investigating it. However, there is still no ETA for the solution.

In the meantime, players can only wait for the developers to release a fix as we haven’t come across a potential workaround yet.

That said, if new developments emerge on the matter in the coming days, we will update this article with all the relevant information.

Update 1 (September 20, 2022)

06:40 pm (IST): Wizards support has confirmed that the issue where MTG Arena is unresponsive after sacrificing a card or targeting with magic card has now been resolved. Also, their official status page suggests the same.
