[Updated] Google Pixel 6a overheating & getting toasty for some early buyers

Google recently launched the Pixel 6a as the latest addition to its A-series on July 21.

The smartphone looks almost similar to the Pixel 6 and features the same camera bar on the back, but Google had to cut some corners here and there to make it pocket-friendly for cash-conscious buyers.

Compared to the standard Pixel 6, the former comes with a low-quality display, lower RAM, smaller battery, and only a single storage option of 128GB. However, the Pixel 6a outperforms several other mid-range phones in many aspects.

However, ever since Google introduced the Tensor chip in its Pixel lineup, users have been running into various kinds of issues. And overheating is one of them.

Pixel 6 and 6 Pro owners have previously reported overheating issues even with normal usage. And it seems that a similar issue is also plaguing some Pixel 6a owners.

Some early buyers of the Pixel 6a have taken to social platforms and Google’s community forum to report (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7) that the device is overheating or getting toasty. And here are some of the reports from those affected.

Hi! It’s just been a day and am noticing my Pixel 6a is overheating on a constant basis even on light usage. Be it using maps or light browsing. Also substantially while using camera for more than 1-2 minutes. Also am stuck in April security patch. I am not even using a fast charger. Using a 10W slow charger. (Source)

Some say that Pixel 6a is overheating even with light usage such as browsing the web, scrolling social media, and taking photos or videos.

A Pixel 6a owner reported that they got rid of the overheating issue by replacing it with a new one under warranty, while another user alleged that Google has confirmed that this problem will be resolved in the next patch.

So, those affected can either replace their Pixel 6a with a new one or wait for the next patch to see if the overheating issue gets resolved.

Also, a product expert said that the Pixel 6a is likely to run hotter than other models and use more power to load updates for a few days, at least until things stabilize. You can check out the full statement below.

Unfortunately, Google hasn’t yet acknowledged this issue but when they do, we will update this story to reflect the latest developments.

01:31 pm (IST): The new update for Pixel 6 and 6 Pro brings thermal performance improvements. So if you are still facing overheating issues, then make sure to update your device to December update.

02:07 pm (IST): It appears that the bug has been fixed in the latest July 2023 update.
