Dropbox on macOS connection icon issue

Lately, Dropbox users on macOS have been facing a bug where the connection icon is grayed out (1,2,3,4,5). It looks like a visual bug, as the software continues to work as intended.

@DropboxSupport Dropbox icon in menu bar on all my Macs (Monterey and older) is grey for some weeks now but there are no connectivity problems whatsoever…any ideas?

I do have an Internet connection and Dropbox services work just fine. But I have just recognized that the Dropbox icon in the Menu Bar is greyed out as can be seen from the screenshot I’ve added below. Is it a bug or a part of the new design of Dropbox?

When there is no internet connection, this icon should turn gray, yet it does so consistently even when there is working internet on the device.

This has created confusion for macOS users, as they are never entirely clear if their files are syncing or not and have to constantly check it manually.

The first few reports about this issue came around three weeks ago, but it has still not been resolved.

As per user reports, rebooting their Mac or restarting the router doesn’t work at all. We hope a patch is released soon that fixes the issue.

Issue acknowledged

Fortunately, Dropbox support is aware the connection icon is grayed out for some Mac owners and they are working on a fix for it. However there is ETA.

Potential workarounds

In the meantime, Dropbox support has provided a temporary workaround that users can try and see if it fixes the issue for them.

Hey there, we hope you don’t mind us replying to you in English. Our team are working to fix this but in the meantime just reinstall Dropbox – https://dropbox.com/download – and it should fix the grey icon.
