[Updated] 4chan website down, not working, or throwing 'SSL handshake failed' error? You're not alone

4chan is one of the most popular imageboard websites where users can post and share images that cover a wide array of topics ranging from anime, manga, cooking, and music, among others.

One of the best things is that users do not need to register on the website before they can upload images.

As of January this year, it had more than 22 million monthly visitors, with almost half of them based out of the United States.

But according to recent reports from 4chan users, the website is either down or not working. Many are getting an ‘SSL handshake failed’ error message which can be seen in the image above.

Some initially thought it was a problem on their end and tried resetting their internet connection, clearing browser cache, and deleting cookies but nothing seems to help.

Down detector – a popular service that gives information about live outages – has numerous reports indicating 4chan is indeed down for some.

Many are expressing their frustration on social media platforms like Twitter. And here are some reports from those affected.

Same here, im from Serbia, thought it was local connection problem. Welp no chug and other based stuff for a while.

Unfortunately, we are yet to come across any official word, but like always, we will be keeping an eye out on the matter and update this article as and when we stumble across more information.

10:42 am (IST): It appears that 4Chan website is now back up and accessible as we haven’t come across any fresh reports on Downdetector.

02:12 pm (IST): Although the service was restored a while back, fresh reports on Twitter and Downdetector now indicate that 4Chan website is again down or not working for some users.

06:17 pm (IST): According to reports on Downdetector, the recent outage with 4Chan website has now been resolved.

11:41 am (IST): Fresh reports on Twitter and Downdetector now suggest that 4Chan website is currently down or not working for many.

05:38 pm (IST): The recent outage with 4Chan website appears to have been resolved as the number of reports on Downdetector has diminished.

09:39 am (IST): According to reports on Downdetector, 4Chan website was down or not working for many a few hours ago, but it is now back up and running.

08:17 am (IST): Recent reports indicate that 4chan is currently down or not available for multiple users (1, 2, 3). The Downdetector platform also reflects the situation.

10:00 am (IST): The lack of new related reports in the last few hours indicates that the 4chan platform is once again available.

12:45 pm (IST): 4chan servers were in the middle of an outage until a few minutes ago (1, 2), but it seems that the problem has been resolved for most users.

11:34 am (IST): 4chan users report that the platform is experiencing server issues or is unavailable (1, 2, 3).

11:22 am (IST): The recent outage with 4Chan appears to have been resolved as we haven’t come across any fresh user reports.
