Original story (published on July 5, 2022) follows:

Manufactured by NVIDIA, the Shield TV is a digital media player that runs on Android. That said, the company recently released the Shield Experience 9.1 update for all Shield and Shield Pro owners adding tons of new features.

However, the software is far from perfect with issues like GameStream/Moonlight lagging or stuttering and third hotfix update breaking HDMI CEC troubling many.

Adding to the trouble, NVIDIA Shield TV owners are now facing a CEC glitch that is preventing them from using the remote to control the TV.

It looks like the problem started after the Experience 9.1 update. Some tried common troubleshooting solutions like resetting the device settings and restarting the Shield TV but to no avail.

CEC volume control only works for making the volume louder. Nothing happens if I try to make it quieter with the remote control. Is this a common problem? everything worked yesterday, but today only the louder button is working not the quieter one. With the stock remote from my soundbar everything is working. I already tried a reboot of my NVIDIA shield and I really don’t want to try out a factory reset of the shield

Since updating my shield today when I select the HDMI input that the shield.is on it doesn’t power up as it used to. So I use the shield remote to wake it up. Also my TV remote doesn’t work or intermittently works in the shield for navigation. I’ve rebooted everything but that’s pretty much the sum.of my knowledge. I’d appreciate any suggestions. Thankfully, NVIDIA Staff commented on the problem and shared a workaround that might help you fix the Shield TV CEC glitch after the Experience 9.1 update.

It requires users to enable Developer Options by heading over to Settings > Properties > About and tapping the Build number 7 times. Then under the HDMI section, disable the “CEC: Ignore active sources during One Touch Play” option.

If you use your TV, soundbar, or AVR remote to navigate SHIELD and you are experiencing issues using the remote 30 seconds after turning on or changing HDMI input to SHIELD, try the following:
Enable Developer options if you haven’t already a. Under settings -> device properties -> About navigate to Build and press select 7 times
Navigate to developer options (under settings-> device preferences)
Under the HDMI section, disable the setting “CEC: Ignore active sources during One Touch Play”
This may restore remote functionality to your SHIELD.

We hope the aforementioned workaround helped you fix the CEC glitch and make the remote work again.
