New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….

Original story (published on July 1, 2022) follows:

Oculus was born as a company focused on VR experiences. They seek to offer complete ecosystem products that allow you to enjoy both games and multimedia content.

The company announced the Oculus Quest series as new VR devices at a more affordable price. To date, Meta has released two generations in the Quest series (Oculus Quest 1 and 2).

That said, currently Oculus Quest users are facing issues after a recent update.

More specifically, Oculus Quest ‘Air Link’ feature performance is stuttering and laggy after the latest v41 update. But there are some workarounds for that.

Oculus Quest ‘Air Link’ stuttering performance after v41 update

Oculus Air Link is a feature that allows users to play PC VR games wirelessly (via streaming) on their Quest devices.

But it seems that the recent Oculus Quest v41 update ‘broke’ this feature, causing stuttering performance every few seconds. This makes many games currently unplayable on the VR headset.

Oculus quest 2 air link problem

I’ve been having a problem with air link, It used to work flawlessly but now every 10 seconds or so I’ll get a stutter and it’s just insanely annoying. I’ve tried a lot of fixes but nothing seems to work. It’s not an internet problem, so I just don’t know what to do.

AirLink issues with no reasoning

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to work out some issues I’m having with AirLink and after many hours I cannot seem to achieve a smooth high quality session. My main issue is an occasional stutter that will persist for several seconds in my vision and controller movement. It is ignorable since it only lasts 1-2 seconds and occurs mostly spontaneously. I have tried VD but dislike it’s colors and have a similar stuttering issue.

Official acknowledgment and explanation of the issue

Fortunately, the Oculus team is aware of the issue and working on a fix. They also offer an official workaround, which consists of changing your Air Link dynamic bitrate.

We’re working on resolving an issue causing Air Link performance trouble for some people with our next update. Meanwhile, if you’ve noticed any new latency or lag with Air Link after updating to v41, try changing your dynamic bitrate for Air Link:

Furthermore, an Oculus Software Engineer reveals that the problem is caused by a functional conflict between the Oculus device v41 update and the Oculus PC software v40 update.

The Oculus Software Engineer also specifies that stuttering performance can occur every 60 seconds, and recommends users to opt into the Public Test Channel (PTC) in the Oculus PC app to receive a fix sooner.

If you see lag exactly every 60 seconds: this is a regression on Quest they’re working on fixing. Most respondents had this issue.

Other potential workarounds

There are other potential workarounds you can try, such as running a ‘repair installation of the oculus software’:

I ended up doing a repair installation of the oculus software. This fixed it, but I’m not sure why it was necessary, as my system had no software changes.

Probably an automatic update in the background or something.

Alternatively, a Redditor suggests that rebooting the Oculus Quest devices at least 2 times after an update helps avoid performance issues.

To top it off, another Redditor suggests using the ‘Oculus Killer’ tool to keep the conflicting software isolated. The tool is available on GitHub.

Update 1 (July 5)

06:00 pm (IST): A user has shared some potential steps that one could try out in order to resolve the problem. Check these steps out below:

Step 1: Press the Windows button and search for “adjust the appearance and performance of windows”
Proceed to the advanced tab and change “Adjust for best performance of:” to background services and press apply

Step 2: Locate where you downloaded your oculus program Follow the path Oculus -> Support -> oculus-diagnostics
Right click “OculusDebugTool.exe” and run it as administrator
Copy the setting bottom to top: Mobile ASW : Disabled Link Sharpening: Disabled Encoded Dynamic Bitrate: Enabled Distortion Curvature: low (PC)Asynchronous Spacewarp: disabled Force Mipmap: off
Press the service button and pre restart oculus service

Step 3: Open task manager and press more details Go to the detail tab and locate something called “OVRServer_x64.exe”. Right click it and set priority to high. This will need to be checked on a lot since the priority gets reset a lot for some reason

Step 4: Go back to the debug tool and open it again as administrator Open the service tab Press toggle console window visibility Have this running in the background and don’t minimize it And remember to check if you have high priority on the application mentioned on step 3
