[Updated] Outlook or other clients preventing access to Gmail account (unable to send or receive emails)? Here's what you need to know

When it comes to email clients, Microsoft Outlook seems to be one of the most popular choices. Developed by Microsoft Corporation, it is part of the Microsoft Office suite.
Even though the app is used as an email client, Outlook also offers other functionalities such as task management, journal logging, and calendar and contact management capabilities.
While the app is used by millions worldwide, issues such as users being unable to open encrypted emails and some not receiving notifications after iOS 15 update have negatively affected the overall user experience.
While Microsoft seems to have fixed the aforementioned problems, it looks like Outlook users are now unable to access Gmail. Many are confused and frustrated as to why they can’t send or receive emails anymore (1,2,3).
Unable to receive gmail in outlook via pop. Last night outlook was receiving gmail fine, today it has stopped. I have confirmed that pop is enabled in gmail settings. And the outlook settings are still as required. I have tried the captcha clear process. I can still send from outlook. I can open gmail in a browser with the same password. When I try send and receive from outlook I get an error for receive only. I have rebooted the computer and the error still occurs. Any ideas?
I received notifications that Gmail may no longer work with Outlook. However, the communication noted that Gmail will work with Outlook 2019 which I am using. Starting today, by Gmail will not work with outlook. I receive an error Task ‘*** Email address is removed for privacy *** – Receiving’ reported error (0x800CCC92) : ‘Your email server rejected your login. Verify your user name and password for this account in Account Settings. The server responded: -ERR [AUTH] Username and password not accepted.”
As it turns out, Google recently discontinued support for third-party apps that require users to sign in to their Google Account using only a username and password.
Also, it looks like the tech giant is actively pushing 2FA authentication and encouraging users to use app passwords.
A user shared a workaround that seems to fix the problem. You can follow the steps in the image below if you want to access Gmail via Outlook.

Update 1 (June 9)
11:27 am (IST): One of our readers has suggested a workaround that might help you resolve the issue. It is for those who use Outlook 2019 on their desktop.
By no means an expert, but I have a similar setup to yours and I did manage to set up everything, using the above steps, but also having to take certain extra steps to get there.
– I did NOT have the option of “App Passwords” in step no. 3 above.
– First, I had to set up / turn on my “2 step verification”.
– After I had that on, that’s when the “App Paswords” option became available to me.
– Also, in the list of Apps, there wasn’t any Outlook mentioned, so I just used the “Other”, typed in Outlook and cliked on “Generate”.
– The 16 code I received I added as “password” when Outlook prompted me for a password (had the “save password” option ticked) and it worked. I hope the above made sense and it worked for you as well.
