Battlefield 2042 is the latest installment in Electronic Arts’ saga of tactical FPS games.

Battlefield 2042 has multiple game modes. However, something that almost all game modes share is that their maps are designed for a maximum of 64 players.

But, the game’s developers have been testing in recent weeks how 128 players play on the same maps across various modes.

The most recent 128-player test was done on Battlefield 2042 Flashback Conquest mode a couple of days ago, and player feedback is mostly negative (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12).

Battlefield 2042 players don’t like 128 player matches

According to multiple reports, the 128-player feature on Battlefield 2042 Flashback Conquest mode (and others where it’s already been tested) brings more negatives than positives.

Apparently, with 128 players, the matches feel chaotic. Players feel that it is not fun to have an enemy appear from behind at any moment (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6).

128 player game modes

I’ve just gone back to try 128 player breakthrough and it’s terrible! Played on manifest which is my favourite map and it’s just not suited to 128 player modes at all for me.

Has anybody else gone back to 128 player and find that the maps just don’t work for it? I think it would have a good chance of working if there wasn’t a bloody sundance or mackay on every single rooftop or beam, thus making normal warfare impossible as you’ve no idea where the shots are coming from!

Also, players lose sight of the objectives to be met. Basically, the games just turn into a massive deathmatch mode.

128 players flashback conquest highlights the main problem with 2042.

Its. Not. Fun. It. Doesnt. Work.

Why does it constantly feel like we’re alpha testers for this small indie dev studio… 128 players is too much and it’s not fun, I’ve played 3 games on flashback conquest, and it’s a very unpleasant experience, feels like a massive deathmatch lobby, there’s no control over objectives, it’s all chaos and the opposite of fun, we loved flashback conquest because they made maps specifically for 64 and 48 players.

The reasons for the rejection of Battlefield 2042 ‘128-player modes’

Battlefield 2042 maps were created with a maximum of 64 players in mind. So, many feel that adding twice as many players to the same maps negatively affects the experience.

After all, maps weren’t geared for that in the first place. The amount of players per match is something to keep in mind when designing maps in a tactical FPS.

Also, some report that the 128 players bring technical and performance issues on consoles.

Until performance matches 128 players, it just doesn’t work though. On Series X if I play 64p modes there is no lag/stutter or frame drops. As soon as I play 128 it starts stuttering. They fixed it briefly in update 4, but for 2 days only. It’s now back to full lag again.

In addition, the game’s communication system feels limited compared to the number of players per match. Currently, players can only communicate with 3 others at the same time.

EA DICE is aware of the poor ‘128-player modes’ gameplay experience

This isn’t the first time DICE has tested 128-player matches in Battlefield 2042. For instance, back in March the company did the same thing on Breakthrough mode.

However, even then, the feedback and overall experience was not positive. In fact, at that time, company representatives concluded that the best experience was achieved with 64 match players.

So, it is curious that the company tries again to integrate 128 players in other modes. It is possible that DICE is testing the idea in various modes to see if any of them are successful before discarding it definitively.

Anyway, seeing the response of the players and the response that the same company had weeks ago, it is possible that they decide to limit all game modes to a maximum of 64 players.

But, at the moment, there is no final public decision from DICE on the matter. We will update this story as events unfold.

Update 1 (May 20)

03:34 pm (IST): There’s an issue in Battlefield 2042 where ticket counts are not updating as intended. This is affecting the number of respawns a player has during a match.

If a team has more respawns, more players in that team can spawn in the territory which makes it easier for the team to capture the area. The support team has acknowledged this bug and is investigating it.

In Update 4.1, we had introduced both 128P and 64P layouts into a mix for Breakthrough 64, and have since identified that ticket counts are not updating as intended. We are investigating this and will update this thread with more information as we complete our investigations. (Source)
