New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….

Original story (published on May 30, 2022) follows:

In the last few years, virtual assistants like Siri and Google Assistant have become an integral part of our lives. Be it grocery shopping, paying bills or control lighting, Google Assistant can easily do it all.

After being a Pixel exclusive feature for some time, Google made the Assistant available to everyone starting in February 2017. That said, the developers have been constantly adding new features.

But like every other app, issues such as 3rd-party shopping list app integration not working and ‘Sorry, I can’t send texts with Telegram yet’ have been affecting the overall experience for some.

And as if the aforementioned issues weren’t troubling enough, many say they are getting an ‘Update the Google app to use your Assistant’ error message whenever they try to use Google Assistant.

Some say they tried force-stopping the app, clearing data and cache on Android, and reinstalling the app but nothing seems to help with the problem.

Affected users are not seeing any update to the app and are already running the latest version of Assistant.

Below are some reports from Google Assistant users troubled by the ‘Update the Google app to use your Assistant’ error message.

Hi, I’m hoping someone can help with an issue my daughter-in-law has been having for about a week with Assistant on her Pixel 3. If she tries to use it, she sees the following message. She’s checked both the Google and Assistant apps (both were up-to-date) and has tried uninstalling and re-installing the apps, as well as switching the phone off/on a couple of times – still without success. Any suggestions how she can fix things?

Just started getting “update the google app to use your assistant”. I have just started receiving the error when trying to use my assistant. My Samsung phone is completely up to date with all of the latest software. I have gone through all of the steps in the article : https://goo.gle/2H5hF5N. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Google assistant and back rev’ed Google and updated it. Nothing seems to be changing the error, it started two days ago and happens 100% of the time.

Thankfully, a Diamond Product Expert shed some light on the matter and said they have escalated the issue to the concerned team for further investigation.

We hope the developers soon find out why this is happening and release an update in the coming days that fixes the problem.

If and when they do, we will be updating this space to reflect the same so keep checking PiunikaWeb for more information.

Update 1 (May 31)

03:55 pm (IST): One of the affected users said that uninstalling the latest app update did the trick for him. Thus, users can try this as a potential workaround and see if it helps.

Update 2 (June 1)

12:57 pm (IST): A Redditor has suggested a workaround that may help you access Google Assistant without getting the error.

I experienced the same. I read that Assistant is built into Google app now, so the Assistant app can be uninstalled. Now you have to load Google (or Google Go) app and hit the mic to run Assistant. Hotkey still works but I had to clear my Assistant default, and set it to use Google Assistant vs Bixby. (Source)
