Original story (published on May 10, 2022) follows:

Spotify is one of the most popular music streaming services on the planet. The platform has more than 80 million songs and has a market cap of more than $23.88 billion as of March 2022.

Available in 180 countries, it had 406 million monthly active users last year. Surprisingly, Spotify Podcasts are also gaining momentum, with stats indicating that there are somewhere around 3.2 million podcasts available.

But in the last few weeks, issues such as ‘Discover Weekly’ not playing or loading and Now playing progress bar missing or disappearing on Android have troubled many.

Adding to the trouble, Spotify users on iOS are now reporting that the app is crashing or freezing whenever they switch back from another app or unlock the device while streaming video podcasts (1,2,3,4,5).

The issue seems to be really frustrating many since they are unable to listen to their favorite podcasts in the background. Users have already tried generic troubleshooting solutions such as logging out and in again, and reinstalling the app but nothing seems to work.

You can see in the video below that the app freezes whenever users switch back from another app when watching a video podcast.

It looks like the problem surfaced in the last few days. Right now, the only way to make Spotify work is by force-closing the app and launching it again. Unfortunately, we are yet to come across any official word on the problem.

We hope Spotify developers acknowledge the issue where the app is crashing when unlocking the device or switching back from another app while streaming video podcasts and fix it as soon as possible.
