[Updated] Google yet to address "Could not communicate with your Nest" issue over a year down the line (workaround inside)

New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….

Original story (published on April 07, 2021) follows:

Google Home/Nest seems to be bumping into plenty of connectivity problems lately. In the past, we highlighted how several users were bumping into errors when trying to connect to their Nest Router.

There was also the case of the Honeywell T6 Smart Thermostat not connecting to Google Home for many. But what’s worse about these issues is the fact that they have persisted for months with no official solution in sight.

And as if the above-mentioned issues weren’t enough of a bother already, another has now come to light wherein trying to connect Google Home/Nest to the Wi-Fi throws “Could not communicate with your Google Home” error.

“Could not communicate with Nest Mini”: Attempted to setup Nest Mini device at new home. Changed location on Home app, didn’t work, so I disconnected and forgot the speaker. When trying to set up, the setup goes well until the speaker attempts to connect to the wifi, where it tries for a split second before showing this screen.

Error during setup of “Could not communicate with your Nest Hub Max”. I have unplugged the Nest Hub Max, turned my phone on airplane mode and activated only the Wi-fi (and later Bluetooth because it was required during setup), restarted my phone, tried using multiple networks to connect. All came back with the same response.

Due to this, none of the Google Home devices are able to communicate with each other which essentially renders them non-functional.

Several users [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6] report that the issue began after they switched their Wi-Fi or moved homes but many more have stated that the issue began automatically one fine day.

Unfortunately, there still hasn’t been any acknowledgment from Google to date even after hundreds of reports. Hence, an official solution still seems unlikely.

Workaround for the Google Home “Could not communicate with your Nest” issue

There is, however, a workaround for the “Could not communicate with your Google Nest” issue that has worked for many and you are of course free to give it a go.

All you need to do is reset your Google Nest. The instructions for how to reset the Nest Mini 2nd Gen have been given below:

Figured it out! Perform a factory reset by turning off the mic on the nest audio and holding down the play/pause button (tutorials are online). Unplug the nest audio for about 30 seconds and you should be good to go.

And if you own the 1st Gen Nest Mini, then you will want to perform the following series of steps:

If things are still unclear for you, then we have also added a YouTube video for clarity:

Update 1 (May 9)

10:05 pm (IST): Google is also suggesting a workaround that involves resetting the Google Nest. It can be done by turning on the mute switch and holding the top-middle (LED light) part for 15-20 seconds.
