[Updated] Chromebook login loop or black screen while attempting to sign in troubles many, issue being looked into

New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….

Original story (published on April 29, 2022) follows:

If you are looking for a laptop that lets users perform basic tasks and has a long battery, then Chromebooks might be the answer. Running on Chrome OS, the operating system is heavily based on web applications.

Chromebooks are also capable of running Android apps, which can be installed and launched just like you would do on an Android phone. Some apps such as Gmail, Google Keep, and Calendar are also available offline.

While Chromebooks might sound great, bugs such as the screen flickering issue when watching full-screen videos and missing Scan mode in the camera app after Chrome OS 96 update have negatively affected the overall user experience.

Adding to the list of issues, recent reports (1,2,3) from Chromebook users suggest that their device is stuck in a login loop. Many say all they see is a black screen when trying to sign in.

Users say they tried switching to the dev channel, removing the account, and power washing their device but to no avail. Here are few reports from Chromebook owners who are either stuck in a login loop or affected by the black screen issue.

Black screen after login into my Chromebook. Hello. Just bought a new Chromebook yesterday. When I’m logging into my Chromebook with my Google account a black screen appears – and so it continues. When I’m trying to log into my Google account everywhere else there is no fault. I have tried factory reset (Powerwash?), removed two-factor authentication from my Google account, logged out of all my Google devices, changed password etc…What should I do?

Got a brand new Chromebook, set it up using my existing Google account & wi-fi connection. However, every time I try to sign in, the screen goes black for a few seconds, then I am returned to the sign in screen again. I have never yet signed in OK, this happens whether I use my e-mail address or phone number.Interestingly, the system seems to ‘know’ my account – if I deliberately put in a wrong password it recognises that straightaway – but doesn’t respond properly to the *correct* password.Have tried repeated ‘powerwashes’ but makes no difference to the problem. Machine works OK if I simply continue as ‘Guest’.

Fortunately, a Diamond Product Expert on the Chromebook Community forum has shed some light on the matter and said the developers are currently investigating the issue where users are stuck in a login loop. However, there is no ETA on when the problem will be fixed.

There are several reports of this issue that the team would like to investigate further. When this issue next happens, please send feedback directly to the team via the sign-in screen by pressing the power button and selecting ‘Feedback’ or by using the key-combo Alt+Shift+i.

We hope Chrome OS developers soon release an update that fixes the problem. If and when they do, we will let you know so stay tuned for further updates.

Update 1 (May 9)
