Original story (published on May 03, 2022) follows:

Google Docs is Google’s own word processor. The software is part of the Google Workspace suite and, like other Google digital products, its operation is based on the cloud.

You can access Google Docs from almost any device that can access the internet and has a web browser. Any changes you make will be synced across all devices sharing the same Google account.

However, currently, Google Docs users have been facing an annoying issue that negatively impacts the experience.

According to multiple reports, ‘This document is above the file size limit’ error message is preventing many Google Docs users from typing on a document.

error message : This document is above the file size limit. You must delete content to continue edit

Hello. I’ve been working on a google document for over two years without any issues. Most recently I was able to edit the document without issue two days ago. But today, I keep getting this error message: “This document is above the file size limit. You must delete content to continue editing.”

However, the documents of the affected users usually have a size of 2 MB or less. So, it does not seem to be an issue related to the available space.

This document is above the file size limit. You must delete content to continue editing.

I have written three novels in Google Docs, and yesterday while editing the shortest of the three, a red bar appeared at the top of the page with the message: “This document is above the file size limit. You must delete content to continue editing.”

The three books are 2.4 MB, 1.6 MB, and 1.5 MB. There is not much else on there, so I don’t think this is a drive space issue.

The problem reportedly started during the last week of April 2022. Also, novelists and writers seem to be the main affected.

Issue already escalated for investigation

A Google product expert revealed that the issue has already been escalated to the Google team. At the moment, affected users can only wait for new official pronouncements to emerge in this regard.

Hi, Teth,

I have escalated this issue but there is no news yet. When I receive an update, I will post it in this thread. This matter is affecting many users (not just novelists), and it appears at this time to be a bug.
