[Update: Outage fixed] Guild Wars 2 stuck on loading or black screen when switching characters, issue acknowledged

Developed by ArenaNet and published by NCSoft, Guild Wars 2 is one of the most popular MMORPG titles. Released in 2012, the game is still going strong with the developers often releasing new content updates.

However, issues such as the Salvage button available on non-salvageable items and bugged Path of Fire quest have negatively affected the overall experience for some.

And now, many Guild Wars 2 players are reporting (1,2,3) that they are stuck on loading or black screen when switching characters.

The issue seems to have surfaced after the latest update with many saying that it has made the game completely unplayable. Moreover, generic troubleshooting solutions such as updating graphic drivers and reinstalling the game are not helping either.

You can see in the image below the black screen where Guild Wars 2 players are stuck when switching characters.

So since the last patch I can’t seem to character select and load into any map. I have to close the game and relog every time. I have 49 characters I use pretty much everyday, This makes it really painful to try and play the game. I really really really hope anet fixes this. It was fine before last patch. I have run the repair client 3 times, run malwarebytes, cleared cookies and cache, and updated graphics drivers. Nothing has helped so far. I put in a support ticket last night so hopefully will hear something soon. I wonder how many people have the same issues. Please help, this is horrible.

So, I’m busy logging a ticket with Anet as well but maybe someone here can also shed some light as to why the issue might be happening. I’m having an issue where when I log into my characters to farm nodes that from time to time (about every 2nd Character switch) the game will just stop loading the characters on an account and then just throw a black screen and not continue loading anything. If I try and log into any of the characters on that account it just infinitely load on the loading screen.

Thankfully, an ArenaNet Staff member has commented on the matter and said that Guild Wars 2 developers are already investigating the problem where players are getting stuck on the loading screen when switching characters.

However, they did not say if and when the bug will be fixed.

09:29 am (IST): Guild Wars 2 players report that the game is currently down or not working as they are unable to log in (1, 2, 3, 4).

10:07 am (IST): The dev team is already aware of the issue and working on a fix.
