Many MetaMask users receiving alleged KYC verification emails

The cryptocurrency segment makes a lot of money and has been growing exponentially in recent years. So, many hackers have set their sights on cryptoactive users as potential victims.

One of the most traditional methods to try to steal credentials is phishing. That is, sending fraudulent emails disguised as official ones where sensitive information from users is requested.

That said, many MetaMask users are receiving emails asking for sensitive or personal information to allegedly complete the KYC and verify the account (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14).

Had an email purporting to to be from Metamask asking for KYC. Haven’t clicked the link. Nothing shows on the app itself. Time to complete seems unreasonable. My name isn’t Ronald. Safe to assume this is a scam right?

@MetaMaskSupport is the email where “Metamask requires all users to verify their Meta Wallet in order to comply with KYC regulations, this must be done before 30/03/2022 as a regulated financial services company” is stated really from you guys, or is this just another phishing

However, the alleged MetaMask KYC emails present all the ‘red flags’ that help identify scams. So, users are reporting the issue to the support team.

Support confirms that KYC emails are scams or phishing

Once the reports reached the support team, they released an official statement on the matter. Basically, they confirm that the MetaMask KYC verification emails are scams or phishing.

We are continuing to receive reports of email phishing campaigns asking users to “verify” their wallet to comply with KYC regulations, along with other types of “verification mandates”. These emails are SCAMS! MetaMask wallets are NOT ASSOCIATED with user email addresses!

MetaMask team also points out that their wallets are not associated with user emails. So, it will never be necessary to use email as a login or verification method.

If you are a MetaMask user and have received a similar email, it is best to report it as a scam. Never share your credentials or sensitive information if you are not sure that an email comes from official sources.
