Google Chrome is undoubtedly the most widely used browser worldwide. Initially released back in 2008 for Windows, it was developed by integrating free components from Apple’s Webkit and Mozilla’s Firefox web engine.

In the last few years, Chrome has dominated the landscape with the browser accounting for more than 68% market share as of October 2021.

However, frequent updates to the browser along with added features result in bugs and issues that cause inconvenience for many.

A few days ago, several users complained that the iOS Chrome app was not working or crashing for them while others said that they were unable to drag, drop or move tabs after updating to Chrome 97.

Now, Chrome users on macOS are saying (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10) that the zoom in shortcut (CMD +) is not working. However, it looks like the zoom out shortcut (CMD -) is working as intended.

As it turns out, Chrome has changed zoom in shortcut on macOS from CMD + to CMD = for reasons unknown.

Can someone help addressing @googlechrome changing the page zoom shortcuts affecting millions of users (cmd+ changed to cmd=). Changing text size in the browser is not enough (px font-size problem) and users rely on shortcuts to zoom. Sorry to bother you @stevefaulkner @aardrian

I noticed today that ⌘+ to zoom in in web pages doesn’t work anymore. I see in the View menu that the suggested keyboard shortcut for Zoom In has become “⌘=”. What happened? Why has it changed? Command + “Numpad -” works fine to zoom out, but Command + “Numpad +” is unresponsive. How can I get it back? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thankfully, a Platinum Product Expert clarified that the Chrome zoom in shortcut not working is indeed a known bug.

With reports coming in from multiple versions of macOS such as 10.11.6, 10.13.6, 10.14.6, 11.6.1, 11.6.2, 12.1.0, it looks like the issue is not limited to the operating system but lies with Chrome itself.

On further investigation, it looks like the issue was reportedly fixed for some on Chrome Canary 99.

We hope that Google fixes the Chrome issue with zoom in the shortcut on macOS as soon as possible. When they do, we will be updating this space to reflect the same so make sure you stay tuned for more information.

Update 1 (February 03)

05:06 pm (IST): A product expert on the Google community confirms that this issue is fixed with Chrome 98 update that was expected to release by February 01.

However, if the problem persists, then here’s a workaround to try. It involves manually changing the shortcut for zoom-in in Google Chrome via System Preferences.
