Chrome is undoubtedly the most used browser on the planet with millions of users. And despite the native Safari browser, many iOS users also prefer using chrome for surfing the internet.

Having said that, Google recently released a new update for Chrome on iOS. This update carries some sorts of performance and stability improvements.

However, rather than improving the user experience, it seems that the latest update has broken the app in a way that users are not able to use it.

As per reports, users say that Chrome is not working on their iPhones after recent update and it is constantly crashing. As a result, those affected took to Reddit and the Google community forum to raise their complaints.

Chrome app on iPhone 12 is frozen on “Welcome to Chrome” and remains unresponsive if clicking on Accept and Continue”. iPhone updated to latest iOS 15.2, Chrome uninstalled and reinstalled, iPhone hard rest – problem persists. (Source)

No freaking idea why Google chrome app has stopped working on my new iPhone 13 pro. It literally freezes 2 seconds after opening the app. I have already tried restarting my phone, uninstalling and reinstalling chrome, both didn’t work. Anyone else have the same issue? (Source)

As apparent from the reports above, something is clearly broken in the latest version of the Chrome app on iOS. According to the reports (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7), the app has become completely unusable after the update.

Users say that they have tried to fix the issue by reinstalling the app or clearing the cache/data, but no luck. However, on the bright side, there are some workarounds that helped users to get rid of it.

Try these workarounds

In a bid to overcome this annoying bug, users have tried several workarounds and fortunately, some of them worked. So if you are having a similar issue then here are those no-brainer workarounds to try.

Workaround 1:

So basically if you are on mobile network (5G or 4G) you are totally fine without any issue. But if you are with wifi and with discovery enabled then you got the issue. (Source)

Workaround 2:

My fix was to turn off network (cell and wifi), launch the app, then once I’m in it, turn network back on. (Source)

If any of the aforementioned workarounds does not help you get rid of this issue, then you’ll have to wait until devs fix it. Unfortunately, neither Google nor Apple has acknowledged this issue yet and we hope that it gets fixed soon.

Update 1 (January 08)

09:59 am (IST): For those still having issues with Chrome, here’s another workaround to try suggested by one of the affected users. You can try it and see if it helps.

I had the same issue, this worked “ The problem is under “Discover” in the new tab.
My solution is first to switch your iPhone/iPad to Aeroplane mode and disconnect Wi-Fi, start the chrome with new tab, disable “Discover” and switch off the Aeroplane mode and switch on “Wi-Fi”.”

12:57 pm (IST): A product expert on the community forums claims that Google is currently working to fix the issue that popped up after the latest Chrome update.

Update 2 (January 11)

04:55 pm (IST): A community manager on the Google forum has confirmed that an update for Chrome is now rolling out that should fix this issue.

An update is rolling out now that addresses the underlying cause, and should resolve the behavior. (Source)
